Palette Knife Oil Painting from Venice by Niki Gulley

"Venetian Textures II" ©2023 Niki Gulley

16" x 12" textured oil on canvas panel

I started this piece during our Plein Air / Photography Art Trek Workshop that my husband, Scott Williams, and I lead in Venice, Italy. We had painted several other grand locations, but decided on day three to paint a more intimate vignette of the canals. Since the whole city is on water, I love how their "garage doors" are actually for their boats! In this painting, I wanted to focus on all of the wonderful architectural textures and age of the homes as seen in the peeling stucco, crumbling bricks and weathered wood. Luckily I had a steady stream of gondolas passing as I was painting so I could add one in to set the mood.

"Bountiful Bulbs" textured tulip oil painting by Niki Gulley

“Bountiful Bulbs” ©2011 Niki Gulley
Textured oil on wrap around canvas • 18” x 48”

Sometimes I like to paint places that I dream about and hope to one day experience, as is the case in “Bountiful Bulbs.” The tulip farms that I’ve seen in photos look so magnificent with their perfect vibrant rows of color combined with hearing my friends’ descriptions of seeing the overwhelming explosion of blooms both inspire me to paint a strawberry-and-lemon-lollipop-dipped world where all of your cares melt away.

E-mail Niki Gulley for more information on my textured floral and contemporary landscape paintings.

Textured Poppy painting by Niki Gulley

“Dreams Revisted” ©2011 Niki Gulley
36” x 48” textured acrylic on canvas

In this painting I wanted to create a dream-like feeling using one of my favorite flowers, the poppy, so I chose to paint this landscape at dusk as the sun is starting to set over the distant hills to add to that mood. I love the wildflower masses in the foreground creating waves of color, and the curving shapes adding to the sense of tranquility. I was mesmerized what the cinematography in the movie “What Dreams May Come” and my painting reminded me a little of those magical graphics, so I decided to title my piece the same.

E-mail Niki Gulley for more information on my textured oil aspen and birch tree paintings.

Last Art Show of 2010

"Skyward Bound II" ©2010 Niki Gulley • SOLD
oil on canvas • 40" x 30"

Sold to a collector in Dallas this month – I painted these aspen trees with extremely thick paint and palette knife so that the artwork is loaded with texture and almost three-dimensional. I love the playfulness of looking up into the treetops, as did the collectors!

If you'd like information on more of my aspen tree paintings or commissioning a unique piece, e-mail me at Niki@NikiGulley.com.

Also, I will have several pieces on display and available for sale at my Last Art Show of 2010 this weekend at the Bath House Cultural Center in Dallas. See bathhousecultural.com for details.

Skyward Bound oil painting by Niki Gulley

"Skyward Bound" ©2010 Niki Gulley
oil on canvas • 30" x 40"

In "Skyward Bound," I wanted you to feel like a little kid again looking up into the treetops, enjoying the beautiful sky and colors above. We forget to do that as adults - we're so focused on straight ahead! Choosing vivid reds, yellows, blues and greens in addition to the perspective from below adds to that playful mood.

If you'd like more information on Skyward Bound, e-mail me at Niki@NikiGulley.com.

Poppy painting by Niki Gulley

Poppy painting by Niki Gulley
5” x 7”

I created this poppy study with palette knife and extremely thick paint to achieve texture and dimension. I love how the bright colors pop and brighten up any room, and how the strokes contain so much movement and energy. Pair with one of my other sunflower or poppy studies to hang in a series.

To see these paintings in person, stop by my booth at Ann Arbor, MI’s Art Festival this week, a2statestreetartfair.com, or e-mail me at Niki@NikiGulley.com for more information.

Transitional Tones IV oil painting by Niki Gulley

“Transitional Tones III” ©2010 Niki Gulley
12” x 12” oil painting

I created these aspen trees with palette knife and extremely thick oil paint to achieve texture and dimension. I love how the bright colors pop and brighten up any room, and how the strokes contain so much movement and energy. The image is painted around the sides of the 1.5 inch deep gallery wrap canvas so that it looks three-dimensional and can be hung as is without a frame for a contemporary look. These chunky aspen paintings look great in pairs or threes.
