"Breaking Through" White Rock Lake Painting by Dallas Artist Niki Gulley

"Breaking Through," White Rock Lake ©2022 Niki Gulley
24" x 18" textured oil painting

On a peaceful spring morning, I set up my easel at White Rock Lake to capture the sun rising behind this beautiful, tangled Cottonwood. I liked how the warm light accentuated the tree's curves and textured bark, and I chose this vertical composition to show off its size and strength. In the distance, the light starts to break through the clouds,  causing  the water's surface to glisten and illuminating the landscape. I hope this scene gives you a sense of peace and lifts your spirits for what the day has to bring.

"Perspective Control" Fall Aspen Painting by Niki Gulley

“Perspective Control" ©2022 Niki Gulley
24” x 12" textured mixed media painting
on 1.5" wrap around canvas with the painting continuing around the edges

Enjoying the melodic tinkling of the aspen leaves rustling in the breeze, the trickling sounds of the babbling brook at our side, and the beauty of fall ablaze with color, I felt invigorated as I began painting this aspen forest. The setting was so peaceful and rejuvenating that I wanted to communicate that joyful feeling of discovery. Filling the canvas with energetic staccato strokes and bold colors, in addition to gently arching the tree trunks reaching towards the sky, add to that uplifting feeling. And then just a sliver of the trail cutting through the forest, suggests the excitement of the journey that is to come.

"Visions of Azaleas" Palette Knife Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

"Visions of Azaleas" ©2022 Niki Gulley
24" x 12" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas, framed in an espresso floater frame

Painted on location, I set up my easel in front of these prolific azalea bushes along Turtle Creek near my home. The vibrant pinks and fuchsia were so full of life set against the cool green leaves, that I wanted to capture not only that vivid spring color but also the elegant sycamore tree in the distance with its speckled white bark.  Contrasting the height of the vertical tree against the horizontal blooms, I chose this vertical panoramic canvas, and repeating shapes throughout creates a harmony to the overall scene. Painted with palette knife and lots of texture, I hope you can feel the beauty and energy of a perfect spring day.

"Sunshine on My Mind" New Sunflower Painting by Niki Gulley

"Sunshine on My Mind" ©2022 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 24" x 12" textured mixed media painting on canvas

Just Sold! I saw these cheerful sunflowers planted in my neighborhood every time I got in my car to ran errands  and they were so bright and colorful, I just had to paint them! So this week, I dragged my body out of bed at 5 a.m. to capture them at sunrise before our Texas heat reached 100 degrees. While not normally an early riser, it was well worth it to bask in their glory while I was painting. I hope you, too, can enjoy their sunshine and start your day with a smile.

"Bundle of Sunshine" Sunflower Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

"Bundle of Sunshine" ©2022 Niki Gulley
24" x 12" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas, framed in an espresso floater frame

I was awestruck by these massive fields of sunflowers blooming in Provence. Seeing this brilliant carpet of gold, with its sea of faces smiling towards the sun, just made me feel happy and I wanted you to experience that joy, too. Exaggerating the tile-roofed house in the distance also adds to that cheerful, whimsical mood of feeling content and like you’ve found your home. Created with palette knife and oil paint, “Bundle of Sunshine” practically leaps off the canvas and comes to life with its vibrant yellow petals and extremely thick three-dimensional oil paint.

"Popping Sunshine" by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Popping Sunshine" ©2022 Niki Gulley

24" x 12" textured mixed media on canvas

I absolutely love it when I come across a whole field of wildflowers – there is something about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of color that inspires awe and delights your senses. I liked how these rows of poppies and rolling grasses created a gentle harmony, inviting you to wander into the distance, getting lost in the moment. Full of color and hope, may my "Popping Color" painting transport you to a happy serene place.

Last Day of Niki Gulley's and Scott Williams' Alsace Art Trek

12" x 12" textured acrylic painting on canvas panel

Day 6, Alsace, France Art Trek: Colmar or Strasbourg
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop
with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

As always, this Art Trek flew by and it was already the last day. So, we decided that we had so much fun painting earlier in the week in Colmar, that we would revisit that beautiful spot and paint in another direction since the scenery was inspiring all around. Today I set up my easel amongst the Russian sage and Black-eyed Susans to capture their joy and energy with a sliver of the cross-timbered architecture in the distance to set the stage. Meanwhile below you can see some of my talented students' paintings working in watercolor, pastel and acrylic.

Students' pastel, watercolors and acrylics

While we painted the rest of our group hopped a train to Strasbourg and toured the town, and others just enjoyed their last free day in Colmar. That night we gathered for one more delicious dinner, enjoying the company of new friends. What an amazing Trek!

Toasting to our last night!
