During our Tuscany Foodie Trek, we stay in the middle of the countryside at a villa surrounded by 360 degree views of the rolling hills and valleys and nearby hill towns. One of the best vantage points and probably my favorite town in Tuscany is Pienza. Perched on high, the city towers over everything around and seems to actually draw the passing clouds to its bell tower and church steeple. This was a particularly gorgeous morning with beautiful puffy white clouds drifting by that created dramatic shadows in the recesses and golden light as it hit the autumn fields.

Painting Godafoss Waterfall with Niki Gulley - Iceland Art Trek

Day 5 - Godafoss

This evening we arrived in time to witness sunset over the massive Godafoss falls at the top of The Golden Circle. I set out to capture these gorgeous falls with all of their power and glory. Using diagonal strokes to capture the energy and strength of the cascades, I also wanted to show the mountains they were tumbling over as the water gushed and tumbled. Dramatic sunset clouds drift by, adding to the rhythm and emotion of this special place.The colors were so beautiful in the sky and created a rainbow of reflected colors in the cascading water. Sketching out my composition and squeezing out my colors ahead of time helped me be able to capture this fleeting moment. I hope you can hear the surging water and feel the joy of this magical place.

Water pounds its way down the falls: cascading, rushing, charging into the riverbed – flowing over rocks, swiftly moving forward. Untamed, the surge finds its way over, under, around the boulder-strewn river. Tumbling waters drive up mists above the falls and the rhythmic sounds create a soothing harmony below.

Painting Ireland's Dingle Peninsula with Niki Gulley

After teaching our Ireland Art Trek, my husband and I stayed a couple of extra days on the Dingle Peninsula on the west coast of Ireland. That day I chose to pull in tight on my composition of these jagged rocks and the waves crashing against them. Having fun creating the uneven textures with the palette knife, I hope you can feel the sound of the water rises and falling as it rushes against the cliffs.

Day 5 - Geysir and Waterfalls on the Golden Circle

This afternoon, we stopped by the Geysir for the photographers to capture the thermal explosion of water and steam, which explodes about every 5 minutes. So much fun to watch! After that, we finished the day with - you guessed it! One more waterfall. Slightly off the beaten path, these cascades rush over rocky cliffs to empty into this massive river valley that will eventually flow out to sea. A great way to end the day!

Just shipped! I was commissioned to paint this cheerful sunflower painting for my collector to coordinate with her other bluebonnet paintings. Huge sunflowers remind her of growing up in Kansas, filled with sun and cheer. Bold strokes capture these sunflowers in thick impasto colors that vibrate across the canvas, all designed to add joy and color to her home.

I am in love with my backyard wildflowers! Each bloom has so many colors and every blossom is slightly different. From pink to red to peach to yellow, they are so beautiful to watch. Today I had to go out in my backyard, set up my easel and capture their joy from life. I hope they lift your spirits, too!
