Energetic Poppy Painting by Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley

"Natural Flow II" ©2022 Niki Gulley

24” x  12” acrylic painting on canvas

I wanted to capture the rhythm, color, and density of our beautiful blooms in Texas as they spread their joy across the landscape. From bluebonnets carpeting the hills at the first sign of spring to vibrant poppies casting their energy as the season starts to flow into summer. Next, plentiful sunflowers greet you as the days turn longer, lifting your spirits with their smiling faces. Finally, the amazing aromas of lavender fill the air as summer kicks into full swing. In this  series, each painting can be hung alone, as a set or triptych, or if you’d like to enjoy the full glory of Texas in spring and summer, this “Natural Flow” quadriptych is designed to lift your spirits and add serenity to your home.

The complete "Natural Flow" series is on exhibit and available through the Good Art Company Gallery in Fredericksburg, TX. For more details, please check out goodartcompany.com/niki-gulley.

"Ready for Harvest II" Winery Painting by Texas Niki Gulley

"Ready for Harvest II" ©2022 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 16" x 20" textured oil painting

Just Sold! I love how in Tuscany you are surrounded by grapevines everywhere you go. My husband and I visited late in the summer to capture the area’s beauty on canvas and film. I was drawn to this vineyard outside of Montalcino, home of Brunello wines. I was attracted to the vibrant vines contrasted against the progressive miles of golden rolling hills dotted with more grapevines, olive trees, and plowed grain fields. The gorgeous, plump purple grapes were ready to harvest at any moment. Setting up my easel across from this vineyard, I began recreating the soft light that would break through the clouds and illuminate various hilltops and plantings. I arranged the vines to lead your eye back to the Tuscan villa and then to the beautiful countryside beyond. And when I finished, we treated ourselves to one of their delicious wines. A perfect afternoon!

Laundry Drying in Burano, Italy by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

12" x 9" textured oil painting

The sound of sheets flapping in the breeze caught my attention and brought me down the alleyway and resulted in one of those purely Italian moments.

"Sunrise in St. Mark's Square" Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Sunrise in St. Mark's Square" Venice ©2022 Niki Gulley
12" x 16" textured oil painting

I painted this piece on location in Venice during our Art Trek we taught in Venice while their infamous Carnival celebration was taking place. Since St. Mark's Square can get overrun with tourists, we chose to get up with sunrise to enjoy the beauty of the city and the peacefulness of those early morning hours. I love the magical light that comes flooding in from the lagoon and is so distinctive of Venice. Fortunately, I got set up in time to capture the glow from the gas lamps, too, before they went out as daylight approached, adding to the mysterious quality of the plaza. Against a backdrop of the Doge's Palace, a few people stroll across the square and signal the energy of the day that is to come.

Siena Tower Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Siena Tower" ©2022 Niki Gulley
12" x 9" textured oil painting on panel

I set up in one of the quiet cobble streets radiating out from the campo of the Medieval hill town of Siena to capture the textures of their ancient walls and this unique old clock tower. Back in my studio, I added final details and textured paint to pull the scene together and recreate the beauty and history we experienced while in this energetic city.

"Olive Grove" from Tuscany by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Olive Grove," Tuscany ©2022 Niki Gulley
10" x 20" textured oil painting

During our Tuscany Foodie Trek, we headed to the wine town of Montalcino to sample some of Italy's world famous Brunello. On our way, we stopped at this beautiful convent with massive ancient olive trees growing on the grounds. In the distance, you can see the nearby hill town with vineyards and more olive groves lining the hillside. I wanted to capture the beauty of those regal olive trees on a beautiful sun-filled day in Tuscany.

"Venetian Textures" Oil Painting by Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley

"Venetian Textures" ©2021 Niki Gulley

SOLD • 12" x 9" textured oil on canvas panel

Just Sold! I started this piece during our Plein Air / Photography Art Trek Workshop that my husband, Scott Williams, and I lead in Venice, Italy. We had painted several other grand locations, but decided on day three to paint a more intimate vignette of the canals. Since the whole city is on water, I love how their "garage doors" are actually for their boats! In this painting, I wanted to focus on all of the wonderful architectural textures and age of the homes as seen in the peeling stucco, crumbling bricks and weathered wood.

Venice Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams - Day 3, Rialto Market

"Sentimental Journey," Venice, Italy ©2022 Niki Gulley
9" x 12" textured oil painting on panel

On the third day of our Venice Art Trek, we took a vaporetto tour of the island and got off at the Rialto bridge where we wandered the fruit, vegetable and fish markets. We left the photographers there to shoot while we set up our easels in this quiet spot marking the oldest restaurant in Venice. This bridge had so much character being made completely of wood, decorated in plantings and flanked by red and white poles that we just had to paint it!

"Gondola Ride II" Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Gondola Ride II," Venice ©2022 Niki Gulley
12" x 9" oil painting

I painted this piece on location during our Art Trek we taught in Venice while their infamous Carnival celebration was taking place. Since St. Mark's Square can get overrun with tourists, we chose to set up our easels along a side street to enjoy the peacefulness and beauty of the city. I love the magical light that comes flooding in through the canals and is so distinctive of Venice. The simple brick bridge and the one yellow building in the distance sets a perfect backdrop to the gondolier rowing his enchanted passengers through the romantic back canals.

The Joys of Doing Art Shows with Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

Perhaps I Should've Listened to My Parents about Becoming an Artist...

It's interesting in talking people to find out that most of you guys have no idea what goes into exhibiting at an art show, but you'd like to know. So... for something a little different this month, how about if I regale you with the process?

It often starts with the show attempting to fit 250 artists' SUV's and trailers (or in our case an 18' box truck with a 5' lift gate) into the set up area which allows about 20 vehicles at a time to unload. Next, you dolly your canopies, display walls, art and support materials (or in our case, we push eleven 6' x 3' x 8' six hundred pound carts) to your booth space.

Yes – that's right! We all own or rent our tents and walls. The show does not supply these. Our fair fees just cover our 10' x 10' piece of concrete. Next, we then proceed to erect our outdoor galleries, which on our fastest day takes about 7 hours – that's as long as there is no heat, humidity, rain, or extra dollying (like uphill over grass at the Cottonwood Art Festival.)

Then, when the weekend is over, we pack each artwork in protective wrapping and take it all down. Luckily this process goes quicker and we can finish in 3 to 4 hours, although it's usually dark by this point. And, occasionally such as in Ann Arbor and Chicago, the show has allowed locals to drive on the streets while you are still loading up.

We then proceed to drive home, often about 1200 miles spread over two days. Usually this goes smoothly other than having to pull in at every state's commercial truck weight station, with the occasional inspections (where you pray you receive no fines or delays.) This particular summer, besides getting some warnings in Wisconsin during out impromptu truck inspection, we ran into a few other surprises. Despite our vehicle having rather low mileage, our sway bar fell off in the middle of Tennessee, we were towed and impounded for the low price of $525 in Chicago's suburbs despite having a parking pass, and lastly our tire blew out on the freeway 10 miles from a town in Ohio on a Sunday. Did I mention almost all businesses are closed on Sundays in Toledo? Fun stuff!

Needless to say, I am so grateful to all of you that come out to support us and allow me to continue my passion for painting!!! Scott's getting closer to retirement, so you may be seeing us less in future years. Sadly, this was our last summer in Ann Arbor, and I will really miss you guys! But, keep in mind I am only a phone call or e-mail away if  you need some artwork to lift your spirits.

"Memories of Sunshine II" Palette Knife Sunflower Painting by Niki Gulley

"Memories of Sunshine II" ©2022 Niki Gulley
30" x 40" textured painting on wrap around canvas

"Memories of Sunshine" was inspired by our trip to Provence, France. Our timing was perfect and the sunflowers were in full bloom. Their bright, smiling faces as big as dinner plates, the sun dappled path leading you deep into the golden field to the quaint stone farmhouse in the distance, and a beautiful summer day with a few peaceful clouds drifting by made for the ideal subject. The resulting painting is full of warmth, color and texture, and my hope is that when you gaze into it, this piece lifts your spirits and brightens up any spot in your home.

"Memories of Sunshine II" is available through the Good Art Company Gallery in Fredericksburg, TX.
