"Cascading Rhythms" Palette knife oil painting by Niki Gulley

“Cascading Rhythms” ©2014 Niki Gulley
12” x 24” textured oil on canvas

Water pounds its way down the falls: cascading, rushing, charging into the riverbed -- flowing over rocks, swiftly moving forward. Untamed, the surge finds its way over, under, around the boulder-strewn river. Tumbling waters drive up mists above the falls, the rhythmic sounds create a soothing harmony below. Autumn’s low light casts long lines through the Aspen trees and glowing verge.

New Dallas Skyline Painting by Niki Gulley

"Golden Moment, White Rock Lake" ©2014 Niki Gulley
Textured oil on canvas • 12" x 24"

On a peaceful autumn day last fall, I went out with my camera to White Rock Lake and captured this beautiful sunset behind the Dallas skyline. I liked how the pampas grass and various plants in the foreground were back lit by the setting sun and how the water's surface was shimmering from the low light, adding to a sense of mystery and tranquility in that golden moment.

"Diagonal Shadows" - New White Rock Lake Painting by Niki Gulley

“Diagonal Shadows” White Rock Lake ©2014 Niki Gulley
12” x 24” oil on canvas

Sunset draws lengthening shadows across the grassy waters edge at Sunset Bay, White Rock. The lake shimmers in the evening glow as sky high above fills with deep blues and before you the soft, moody colors stretch out, long lines beckoning you into the complex diagonal composition. Rich texture models the leaves, branches and tree trunk rimmed in the sunset and shadow. Vivid masses of color form the foliage on the opposite bank, fall at its peak. The long cast shadows draw you into the tranquil landscape and the peaceful, dreamy sunset at White Rock Lake.

"Kaleidoscope of Dreams" Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

"Kaleidoscope of Dreams" ©2014 by Niki Gulley
Four 36" x 36" canvases to form a 72" x 72" quadriptych • original textured oil painting

In this painting, I wanted you to feel like a little kid again – laying on the ground and staring up into the treetops without a care in the world. I hope you experience the joy of being surrounded by nature and the beauty in this autumn kaleidoscope of colors.

Canvas Prints now Available:   I have received so many requests that I am now offering canvas prints of "Kaleidoscope of Dreams." Four 24" x 24" canvases are stretched on 3/4 inch stretcher bars with the image continuing around the edges to form a 48" x 48" quadriptych that does not need to be framed, just like the original . I have also added thick paint in some of the leaves and trunks to add even more texture and making each print one of a kind. Finally, I have coated the canvases with a UV varnish to protect the paintings. The canvases can be hung right up next to each other or spread apart by a few inches to come out to a maximum of 53" x 53". I can also make other sizes or stretch Kaleidoscope of Dreams on deep 1 and 1/2 inch stretcher bars for an additional fee. Please contact me at Niki Gulley for more information on the original painting or canvas prints.

One of the canvases in the set of four showing the painting wrapping around the edges so that it can be hung as is without a frame.

JUST SOLD! Inspired by a trip to the Texas hill country, I wanted you to feel the warmth and beauty as sun sets over this carpet of bluebonnets and Texas wildflowers. Touched with a hint of mystery from the long shadows being cast and a sense of romanticism from the time of day and the two oaks reaching for one another, this piece is loaded with pigment and thick oil paint. "Creating Memories" Palette Knife Oil Painting of Venice, Italy by Niki Gulley

"Creating Memories," Venice ©2014 Niki Gulley
24" x 36" • textured oil painting

Inspired from our first trip to Italy, I fell in love with everything about Venice. The city feels preserved in time with all transportation happening on water versus roads. The architecture, art, history, and people are all fascinating, the food and wine delicious, and it was such a romantic place to visit. So in this painting, I captured a lone gondola to convey that feeling of lazily drifting along with your loved one down this brick canal filled with history and future memories.

White Rock Artists' Studio Tour - this weekend

"Triple Passion" ©2014 Niki Gulley
textured oil painting on wrap around canvas
Can be hung horizontally 24" x 48" or vertically 48" x 24"

I love the passion and energy in the color red, so I thought it would be fun to play with the still life I had set up of roses and make a painting where red was the dominant color.  In person, seeing these roses at life size, I wanted the viewer to be swept up in the movement and emotion of this piece. Utilizing flowing spirals, weaving back and forth, playful thick and thin paint in bold, loose strokes, ruby petals emerging and disappearing, all meant to tease the eye and excite your senses.

"October Rhythms" Palette Knife Aspen Trees by Niki Gulley

"October Rhythms" ©2014 Niki Gulley
36" x 48" textured oil painting on gallery wrap canvas

I find being immersed in nature can have such an uplifting effect, and I wanted to share that feeling with you in October Rhythms. I chose pure, intense reds and yellows contrasted against autumn golds and chocolates to create an fall forest that vibrates with color, energy and sound. The repetition in the aspen trunks and foliage patterns, combined with the flickering tones of the breeze rustling the leaves reminded me of a symphony in the forest so I titled this painting October Rhythms.

"Luminescent Radiance" textured oil painting of Monet's Garden by Niki Gulley

"Luminescent Radiance" ©2014 Niki Gulley
Two 48" x 18" canvases with one 48" x 30" canvas in the middle to form a 48" x 66" triptych
Textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

I decided it would be a fun challenge to create an extremely large painting, and I wanted the final piece to be very uplifting, colorful and full of energy. Opting for warm colors and working with extremely thick paint and palette knives, I chose this lily pond reference from our visit to Monet's Gardens in Giverny, France. The grounds were breathtaking and I could actually see his paintings come to life. I was drawn to the energetic flow and yet calming serenity in this view, and I positioned the water lilies and my paint strokes in a curving pattern to add to that mood. The morning light peeking through the distant foliage added to a sense of mystery and promise that I wanted to capture in paint, and share with you that feeling of hope.

"Fire and Gold" - Textured Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

"Fire and Gold" ©2014 Niki Gulley
textured oil on canvas • 36" x 48"

I love the first signs of fall – the crisp feel in the air, the crunching of leaves underfoot, the beautiful autumn colors, and being totally immersed in nature in the middle of a forest without a care in the world. In Fire and Gold I wanted to recreate that joyful feeling, choosing warm reds and yellows of autumn and using energetic strokes with my paint to heighten that mood. Building up first thin transparent layers and then thick textured layers of oil paint also add to a certain glow and magic in the final piece.
