New "Waves of Wildflowers" Texas Bluebonnet Painting by Niki Gulley

“Waves of Wildflowers" ©2019 Niki Gulley
25.5" x 12.5" textured oil painting

I wanted to capture the rhythm, color, and density of our bluebonnets and vibrant wildflowers flowing along the grassy rises and falls of the berms so indicative of the Texas Hill Country. Making sure not to over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the energy found in nature, Waves of Wildflowers is loaded with texture, color and movement. Dramatic clouds set the backdrop while vertical curving rows of cobalt and crimson lead your eye to the house tucked into the distant foliage, welcoming you home. Arranging the bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush vertically are designed to lift your spirits and add joy to your home.

New "Tapestry of Colors" Texas Landscape Painting by Niki Gulley

“Tapestry of Colors" ©2019 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 30" x 40" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Just Sold through the Good Art Company Gallery! In this painting, I wanted to capture the rhythm, color, and density of our bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush and vibrant wildflowers flowing along the grassy rises and falls of our berms in the Texas Hill Country. Making sure not to over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the energy found in nature. Repeating patterns and waves of color create a harmony within the painting, while rendering the blooms slightly abstract plays with taking a traditional subject matter and showing it in a contemporary way.

"Rooted Together" Palette Knife Poppy Painting by Niki Gulley

"Rooted Together" ©2019 Niki Gulley
24" x 12" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas, framed in an espresso floater frame

Rooted Together was inspired from a trip we took to Monet’s Gardens outside of Paris. Being a lover of impressionist paintings, I was awestruck standing in the footsteps of one of my favorite painters! The gardens have been maintained immacuately and I could see exactly where he painted his paintings. I’ve always loved pĂ„urple irises and was particularly drawn to this view, with the irises large in the foreground and all of the colorful blooms leading up to his house behind them. Painted with thick oil paint and palette knife, this canvas is loaded with texture, surprising pops of color and energy.

"Rooted Together" along with several of my contemporary impressionistic landscape paintings are available through my gallery, the Good Art Company, in Fredericksburg, TX at goodartcompany.com/gacart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=25&sort=20a&page=1&z.

New "Bundle of Sunshine" Sunflower Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

"Bundle of Sunshine" ©2019 Niki Gulley
24" x 12" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas, framed in an espresso floater frame

I was awestruck by these massive fields of sunflowers blooming in Provence. Seeing this brilliant carpet of gold, with its sea of faces smiling towards the sun, just made me feel happy and I wanted you to experience that joy, too. Exagerating the tile-roofed house in the distance also adds to that cheerful, whimsical mood of feeling content and like you’ve found your home. Created with palette knife and oil paint, “Bundle of Sunshine” practically leaps off the canvas and comes to life with its vibrant yellow petals and extremely thick three-dimensional oil paint.

"Bundle of Sunshine" along with several of my contemporary impressionistic landscape paintings are available through my gallery, the Good Art Company, in Fredericksburg, TX at goodartcompany.com/gacart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=25&sort=20a&page=1&z.

"Flowing into Spring" Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Flowing into Spring" ©2019 Niki Gulley
24" x 12" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas, framed in an espresso floater frame

I painted this scene from the Dallas Arboretum on location a few weeks ago when the weather was beautiful and the spring buds were in full bloom. I love tulips being one of the first flowers to announce that winter has officially ended, so I focused on these colorful red and white striped ones in the foreground, which contrast so well against the complimentary green leaves and grasses. I also liked how their height leads you back into the distant flower beds and onto the Degolyer house in the background, so I chose this vertical panorama format to accentuate that feeling. Loaded with thick oil paint, texture and movement, I hope you can feel the joy that spring is in the air!

"Flowing into Spring" along with several of my contemporary impressionistic landscape paintings are available through my gallery, the Good Art Company, in Fredericksburg, TX at goodartcompany.com/gacart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=25&sort=20a&page=1&z.

"Visions of Azaleas" Palette Knife Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

"Visions of Azaleas" ©2019 Niki Gulley
24" x 12" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas, framed in an espresso floater frame

Painted on location, I set up my easel in front of these prolific azalea bushes along Turtle Creek near my home. The vibrant pinks and fuchsia were so full of life set against the cool green leaves, that I wanted to capture not only that vivid spring color but also the elegant sycamore tree in the distance with its speckled white bark.  Contrasting the height of the vertical tree against the horizontal blooms, I chose this vertical panoramic canvas, and repeating shapes throughout creates a harmony to the overall scene. Painted with palette knife and lots of texture, I hope you can feel the beauty and energy of a perfect spring day.

"Visions of Azaleas" along with several of my contemporary impressionistic landscape paintings are available through my gallery, the Good Art Company, in Fredericksburg, TX at goodartcompany.com/gacart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=25&sort=20a&page=1&z.

"Visions of Wildflowers II" Palette Knife Bluebonnet Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

“Visions of Wildflowers II" ©2018 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 36" x 36" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Just sold! In this Texas wildflower series, I wanted to capture the excitement and energy felt during a beautiful April day when the bluebonnets are painting the horizon in blue. Driving through the hill country in springtime, there is such an amazing explosion of color from the bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, coreopsis and the plethora of wildflowers, that it fills your heart with joy and awe. Focusing on the rows of color versus a traditional landscape scene, I felt like I could communicate more of the emotion felt being surrounded by all of this Texas beauty.

New "Resting Spot" Oil Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“Resting Spot” ©2019 Niki Gulley
14" x 11” textured oil on painting

I painted "Resting Spot" on location in East Texas amongst the piney woods. This scene was so peaceful and I liked how the evergreens provided shade, keeping the warm Texas sun at bay. One lone boat sits on the shoreline, inviting you to sit down and row across the tranquil lake. I hope this piece transports you to a quiet weekend escape, surrounded by nature and not a care in the world.

"Nature's Ascension" Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Nature's Ascension” ©2019 Niki Gulley
16" x 12” textured oil on painting

I created "Nature's Ascension" on a beautiful day last fall at one of my favorite painting spots near our home. I was attracted to the colorful dappled light raking across these steps and hillside, beckoning you to ascend. Meanwhile this majestic sycamore stands tall in its fall glory, also inviting you into the distance to discover what's beyond. Painted with palette knife and thick oil paint, this landscape is filled with color, movement and energy!

"Morning Along the Shoreline" Palette Knife Oil Painting by Dallas Artist Niki Gulley

“Morning Along the Shoreline" ©2019 Niki Gulley
16" x 20” textured oil on canvas

Painted on location, I was drawn to this magnificent Magnolia tree with its massive tangle of gnarly roots. Gripping the water’s edge, it anchors the foreground and leads you down the meandering creek where morning light shimmers across its surface. Adding unexpected pops of color, I wanted this painting to be full of joy while giving you a sense of peace in this protected oasis.

"Over the Hills III" Bluebonnet Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

"Over the Hills III" ©2018 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 16" x 20" textured oil painting

Just Sold through the Good Art Company Gallery! Last spring we loaded up the car and headed south to visit the Texas Hill Country to see the wildflowers in bloom. While not as prolific as some years, the thick patches we found did not disappoint. It's so exciting to see a massive carpet of blue across our usually green hills, and I love how the bluebonnets signal that spring has arrived!

For our next stop on our Texas adventure, I decided to paint in Austin since the wildflowers were so prolific there. This field was covered with not only the bluebonnets that I love, but also the Indian Paintbrush and Indian Blanket that fills me with energy and joy when I see a field of all of that red! The blossoms formed such rhythmic rows as they iced the rolling hills that I set out to capture that harmony and movement in this piece. Painted with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve depth and texture, the resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and excitement.

Nighttime in St. Mark's Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

"Nighttime in St. Mark's," Venice ©2019 Niki Gulley
9" x 12" textured oil painting

Venice is one of the most romantic cities I’ve visited, and at night it is especially dreamy, quieting down from the tourist traffic and filled with sparkle and energy.  In St. Mark’s Square, you can hear the sounds of live music while couples dine al fresco or stroll through the dimly lit open corridors. Gorgeous marble tile floors line the walkways while golden arches frame the iconic views. I wanted to capture that magical feeling and transport you back to fond memories of your Venetian vacation.

New Santorini Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Table for Two," Santorini • by Niki Gulley
12" x 9" oil painting

I painted this peaceful scene on the last day of our Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop in Santorini, Greece. Having loved taking in this view from our balcony for the past several days, I just had to capture that gorgeous overlook on canvas. With its beauty, white-washed buildings and the deep blue Aegean background, Santorini is one of the most romantic places we have visited. The table set for two invites you and your loved one to relax, enjoy a glass of wine and let all of your cares slip away. Paradise!

Next May we will be leading an Art Trek to Athens and Santorini, Greece. So if you've always dreamed of painting, photographing and sightseeing abroad, please join us for this amazing trip! Other trips we will be leading soon include:

14" x 18" textured oil painting by Niki Gulley
SOLD • Amalfi Coast

Recently I was commissioned to paint this special memory from the Amalfi Coast for one of my collectors. He was amazed by the abundance of fresh produce and vibrant colors of this fruit and vegetable vendor that was set up alongside the gorgeous backdrop of the Italian Riviera. New Reykavik Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

9" x 12" textured oil painting by Niki Gulley
Reykavik, Iceland

My husband and I rounded out our Iceland adventure by finishing in the capitol city of Reykavik. While a lot more peaceful than Dallas, TX, it was quite a contrast to be in the bustling city after the vast peacefulness of the countryside. One of the things I liked about Reykavik was how colorful the buildings were painted and how much that brightened up a grey day. Setting out to capture those fun colors and the energy of the city, I chose to paint this overview of town with main street leading your eye all the way down to the harbor. Created with palette knife and a lot of paint, I wanted to leave this painting fairly loose to add to that lively feeling and energetic vibe I felt in Reykavik.

New Iceland Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

9" x 12" textured oil painting by Niki Gulley
Iceland

For our next Iceland adventure, you guessed it - we visited another waterfall! Today the wind was picking up again, so we aimed the car towards the falls and I painted from the front seat while the wind rocked our car and Scott to sleep. Meanwhile, I set out to capture the gorgeous falls with all of their power and glory. Using diagonal strokes again to capture the energy and strength of the cascades, I also wanted to show the mountains they were tumbling over and a sliver of the river in the distance as the water flowed onward. Dramatic clouds drift by, adding to the rhythm and emotion of this special place.

Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley paints Glaciers in Iceland

9" x 12" textured oil painting by Niki Gulley
Iceland

One of the highlights of our Iceland trip was to visit the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. Completely otherworldly, large chunks of blue ice break and float along the water's surface while the massive glacier looms in the distance. My favorite color being aqua, I had to capture all of the gorgeous blues in the water and the ice. While a little overcast, the sun was able to peak through the clouds and create a dreamlike sunset casting a golden tint across the lagoon. A magical moment!
