I loved this brilliant aspen forest with its bright white aspen trunks slicing through all of the vibrant red and yellow foliage. The patterns of the trees created a sort of rhythm and I focused on the placement of the ivory sentinels, the diagonal purple shadows that they cast and the rustling of the leaves to add to that musical feeling. I hope you, too, can sense the energy and joy of being surrounded by nature as autumn is in full swing.

Peaceful and mysterious, the sun's rays peek through the knotted trunks causing the landscape to dance with light and awaken with autumn’s kaleidoscope of colors. Just Sold! I was drawn to this meandering path leading through the aspens with its dappled light creating such gorgeous shadows and summer wildflowers brightening the journey. Having fun capturing all of the different textures with palette knife from the lush grasses to the leaves rustling in a gentle breeze to the peeling bark on the aspen trees, I set out to recreate the peace and beauty of this forest. I hope you, too, can feel the serenity of this rejuvenating place and enjoy an uplifting walk in the woods.

Bordering on the edge of abstraction and the cusp of realism, Knot in the Woods is loaded with layers of paint, built up with thin glazes and then palette knife to create extreme dimension. Choosing to come in tight on the subject, I played around with various strokes and paint thicknesses to add depth and dimension. Splashes of gold and pops of fire-engine red add excitement and energy to the expansive aspen forest.

I painted the sketch for this piece in the mountains and found it especially cathartic and peaceful. It was such a joy to be there surrounded by nature's fall glory, that it would lift my spirits every day. I feel so fortunate to be able to do this and I hope that you can feel the joy that I felt when you gaze into autumn's waves of color.
