Just SOLD! Painting this piece on location, I wanted to capture the movement in the ocean as the tides lapped along the shoreline. With the waves creating their cathartic rhythmic sounds, I left my strokes loose to convey that energy and motion. There was a beautiful sunset tonight that caused the sky and water's surface to dance in these ethereal shades of pink and gold. I hope you, too, can feel the peaceful magic in the moment.

Painting this piece on location, I strove to capture the sparkle the sun cast across the turquoise waters as it slowly rose above the horizon. Creating bobbing diamonds of sparkling light across the surface was truly mesmerizing to watch.

Filled with beautiful homes built in the late 1800s, I was attracted to the detailed craftsmanship and historic architecture of this estate. Each homeowner had taken great care in decorating their porches and yards to create a warm welcome, and I wanted to capture that beauty and pride in my paintings. 

Here you can see this beautiful pink Victorian surrounded by more beautiful rose and scarlet blooms. I loved the play of complimentary colors, even down to the green detailing and scrollwork on the house.

I come from a very analytical background. My parents were quite practical and left brained. In art school, I was taught do this, then this, then this – these are the rules. Then, I got to college and they went 180 degrees the other way and gave absolutely no instruction!

So, now I find myself straddling the middle – a beautiful balance between the two worlds.

But, that makes the work hard for me to describe in words. Getting out of my head and no longer living by all of those rules, and now following my heart so that you can experience nature's catharsis in your own way.

My process:

– A stroke here full of joy and energy!

– Another area that is too kinetic and that I must calm down to create quite contemplation there

– The next passage is too dull and drab. It needs life breathed into it so you can fully feel nature's energy and renewal.

– A few bold, completely unexpected sweeping marks, allowing your imagination to fill in its own story

– Layers and layers of thick juicy paint forming complex patterns, expressing the full spectrum of life!

– A dance- 2 steps forward, 1 step back

– A melodic harmony unfolding

Until finally a beautiful symphony emerges, when I feel it in my heart and this dream-filled creation says what it wants to say.

Loaded with warm memories and delightful anticipation of our visit back, I've been working on capturing that joy, movement and vibrancy in this new "Land in Motion" series. Painting these wildflowers larger than life, I wanted you to be fully immersed in their beauty. Imagine an "Alice in Wonderland"-type experience where you step into a world of childlike wonder, curiosity and depth.

I built up so many layers in this set so that there is a richness in dimension, a harmonic flowing movement between earth and sky, and a bouquet of hidden surprises. In this painting I wanted to create a dream-like feel using one of my favorite flowers, the poppy. There is something awe-inspiring about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of vibrant, energetic crimson that delights your senses and lifts your spirits. Arranging the wildflower masses in the foreground to create waves of color and repeating those curving shapes throughout the landscape add to a sense of joyful harmony and tranquility. Expressive marks and bold palettes create an immersive environment that invites you to experience the vitality of the land itself, feeling alive with energy, freedom, and expansive possibility.

Moving through the fear of starting a new large project – so exciting and yet intimidating! To help me paint more from my soul and less from my head, I first created an abstract "mess" of color. Then, allowing the canvas to guide me to tell its story and where to place my strokes and colors, the fun began. Truly 

exhilarating and just a little scary letting go of all control, like magic the landscape starts to emerge. I relish that freedom just playing and the aha moment where you feel everything coming together. After days, weeks, and even months of building layer upon layer of thick, textured paint, your subconscious vision comes to life.

The canvas dances with color, sings with energy and my heart feels full. That's when I know it is complete and I can't wait to share that with you so you can get lost in the joy of luscious paint and nature's beauty, too! Filled with so many layers and surprising pops of color all over the canvas, you'll never get bored looking into "Delightful Anticipation" as there is always something new to discover.

Texas Bluebonnet Landscape by Contemporary Impressionistic Niki Gulley

My labor of love these past two months! With the canvas as wide as I am tall, and so many ups and downs my step ladder painting it, this one was quite the workout. But, it was important for me to completely immerse you in the energy found amongst nature. This painting is best seen in person so that you can step into this life-size canvas and feel our' landscape's beauty yourself.

I made sure to not over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the vivacity found in nature. Repeating patterns and waves of color create a harmony within the painting. Rendering the wildflowers along with their surroundings loosely plays with taking a traditional subject matter and putting a new twist on it.  Surprising pops of color invite your eyes to dance around the canvas, feeling the excitement of the moment. Voluminous and dramatic clouds surround your journey into this uplifting harmonic expression of joy and hope.
