Birch Tree textured paintings by Niki Gulley

5x7 birch study II ©2011 Niki Gulley
textured painting on board

I painted these autumn birches with extremely thick paint and palette knives to achieve extreme texture. The resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and energy. This birch series can be propped up on an easel without a frame, or I have a 5" black frame with a gold inner lip or a solid gold plein air frame that sets the small painting off beautifully. To purchase or see examples framed, e-mail Niki Gulley.

Pictured above, Monday's 5" x 7" birches next to Wednesday's and today's birches.

The 5" x 7" and 12" x 12" squares look great hung in pairs and threes! To see more of my 12" x12" and large scale contemporary birch and aspen tree paintings, visit nikigulley.com/?page_id=1343

Textured Bluebonnet oil painting series by Niki Gulley

"Texas Treats" ©2011 Niki Gulley
12" x 12" textured oil painting on canvas

I painted these Texas bluebonnets and with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve extreme texture. The resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and energy. In this wildflower series, I've painted the scene around the edges of the canvas on 1 and 1/2" deep stretcher bars so that the paintings can be hung without a frame for a unique sculptural effect.

These 12" x 12" squares look great in pairs and threes! Hang them horizontally to fill space, vertically for a small wall or diagonally to lead your eye upwards, such as in a staircase.  If interested in purchasing any of these bluebonnets, e-mail Niki Gulley.

Pictured above are today's "Texas Treats IV" next to Wednesday's "Texas Treats" and Monday's "Texas Treats V" canvas.

The "Texas Treats" series hung vertically.

The "Texas Treats" series hung diagonally.

Textured Birch Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

“Ruby Emergence” ©2011 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 48” x 60” textured acrylic on wrap around canvas

I wanted this painting to be about the power and energy in nature to invigorate your spirit more so than an exact replica of the forest, so I chose to use warm vivid colors and thick staccato strokes to add to that feeling. I placed the foliage in diagonal sweeping shapes to create a sense of movement, so that you can feel the wind gently rustling the leaves and causing them to dance.

In "Golden Transitions," I wanted you to feel like you were deep in the middle of the woods surrounded by nature in all of its beautiful autumn glory. I painted these aspen trees with extremely thick oil paint so that the texture and colors leap off the canvas.

"Scenic Route" - Autumn oil painting by Niki Gulley

“Scenic Route” ©2011 Niki Gulley
Oil on canvas • 20” x 60”

My husband and I love exploring the back roads whenever we’re en route somewhere. We always discover such interesting places, and the scenery is so much more picturesque than along the highway. It’s fun to slow down and enjoy the journey with no agenda, which is what I had in mind when I painted “Scenic Route,” a beautiful fall drive through the winding hills far from the city.

"Reflections in Time" - Autumn oil painting by Niki Gulley

“Reflections in Time” ©2011 Niki Gulley
Oil on canvas • 24” x 36”

This painting is inspired by one of my favorite spots just ten minutes from our home in Dallas. It was a perfect autumn day – about 70° with a slight breeze and the peaking autumn colors were more vibrant than usual. With such a gentle wind, the vivid foliage and gorgeous fluffy clouds were reflected fairly clearly in the water and yet at the same time, I chose to create fluid moving strokes to suggest the peaceful energy in that moment.

"Muted Hues" aspen tree oil painting by Niki Gulley

"Muted Hues" ©2011 Niki Gulley
36" x 36" oil on canvas

I paint a lot of bold fall foliage scenes from Colorado and farther north, but I wanted this aspen painting to have a more peaceful feel so I used much softer, more muted color palette to add to that mood.

"Deep in the Woods" textured aspen painting by Niki Gulley

“Deep in the Woods” ©2010 Niki Gulley
oil on canvas • 36" x 36"

I am absolutely crazy about aspen trees. I love their textured peeling bark, the sound of their tinkling leaves blowing in the breeze, the way the light illuminates their yellow leaves and makes them glow, and the repetition of the trunks packed so tightly together. The first time I saw them was on a trip with my family to Colorado and I fell in love with the beautiful scenery and peacefulness I found immersed in the forest and surrounded by mountains. I wanted to share my love of nature in “Deep in the Woods” so that you, too, could enjoy that calm and the beauty of the aspens.

"Climbing Trees" Winter Birch Trees oil painting by Niki Gulley

“Climbing Trees IV” ©2011 Niki Gulley
40” x 30” oil on canvas

Growing up in the midwest, I loved the first snowfall of the year when everything would get a beautiful dusting of pristine white powder, including even the tiniest of branches in the treetops above. If you caught that moment early enough in the morning before anything had disturbed the intricate frosted web, it was just magical. Then the sun would start rising and peeking through the limbs, and everything would sparkle like diamonds. In Climbing Trees, I wanted to capture that brief beautiful moment when the sunlight dances through the icing on the treetops and you can feel yourself looking up in wonderment just like you did when you were a kid.
