New Autumn Path Palette Knife Oil Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

Autumn at the Dallas Arboretum ©2013 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 40" x 30" textured oil painting

Just Delivered - For this commissioned painting, my collectors asked me to create something special for them which would bring back fond memories. They love hiking and nature, and here in Dallas, they have a particular fondness for the Arboretum. Using thick textured oil paint with palette knives, I created this Arboretum fall path so that it is filled with color and dappled light, mystery and romanticism, and texture and energy!

"Reflections in Time" - Autumn oil painting by Niki Gulley

“Reflections in Time” ©2011 Niki Gulley
Oil on canvas • 24” x 36”

This painting is inspired by one of my favorite spots just ten minutes from our home in Dallas. It was a perfect autumn day – about 70° with a slight breeze and the peaking autumn colors were more vibrant than usual. With such a gentle wind, the vivid foliage and gorgeous fluffy clouds were reflected fairly clearly in the water and yet at the same time, I chose to create fluid moving strokes to suggest the peaceful energy in that moment.

E-mail Niki Gulley for more information on my fall foliage oils.

Dallas Skyline oil painting by Niki Gulley

"Golden Moment, White Rock Lake" ©2010 Niki Gulley
oil on canvas • 12" x 24"

Just off the easel! On a peaceful autumn day last fall, I went out with my camera to White Rock Lake and captured this beautiful sunset behind the Dallas skyline. I liked how the pampas grass and various plants in the foreground were back lit by the setting sun and how the water's surface was shimmering from the low light, adding to a sense of mystery and tranquility in that golden moment.

If you'd like information on "Golden Moment," e-mail me at Niki@NikiGulley.com.

I will also have several pieces on display and available for sale at my Last Art Show of 2010 this weekend at the Bath House Cultural Center in Dallas. See bathhousecultural.com for details.

Moment of Reflection oil painting by Niki Gulley

"Moment of Reflection" ©2010 Niki Gulley
24" x 18" oil on canvas

This is another one of my favorite spots in Dallas. Once you climb down the creek’s banks, you’re treated to the peaceful trickling sounds of the gently moving water and you’re surrounded by a canopy of trees, completely eliminating all signs of traffic and city life above. This location reminds me so much of the woods I’d hike through with my parents as a kid on a beautiful, crisp autumn day and all of those happy memories come flowing back. In “Moment of Reflection,” I wanted to share that joy and calm I feel being surrounded by nature.

Plein Air Painting Workshop

"Afternoon Impressions" by Niki Gulley
14" x 11" oil painting

I am so anxious for spring to be here, that I just had to get out of the studio yesterday and paint outdoors. Pretending that winter is actually over, it turned out to be a lovely afternoon for a few hours and I decided to set up at one of my favorite locations in Dallas, Turtle Creek.

While right now it's still too early for the azaleas to be in bloom, I really love the peacefulness of the trickling water sounds from the creek, the intertwining branches in the tree limbs above, and the dappled shadows created from the sunlight peeking though them. I only had a short time so I had to capture the scene and light quickly!

If you'd also like to paint this beautiful part of Dallas, join me March 27th when I teach my next workshop, "Conquering Cabin Fever: Expand your painting into a whole new world outside the studio," let me know. For more information, visit nikigulley.com/ng2/?page_id=13
