Alsace, France Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

9" x 12" textured acrylic painting on canvas panel

Day 1, Alsace, France Art Trek: Kaysersberg
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop
with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

For our first Art Trek of 2022, we led our group to the fairytale villages of Alsace, France. Located along the French/German border, each town is a visual paradise consisting of brightly colored cross-timbered houses and flower boxes overflowing with vibrant, cheerful blooms. The hardest part is narrowing down what to paint!

On our first full day, we visited the picturesque town of Kaysersberg. Nestled on a peaceful river, this colorful village provided plenty of inspiration for our painters and photographers. We set up our easels to capture this waterfall and cross-timbered houses while the photographers and tourists explored the rest of town. Later that day, we returned to our home base town of Colmar, taking a leisurely boat ride through the canals and dined on an authentic Alsatian meal that evening. What a great way to start the trip!

"Pearls of Sunshine" from Aix-en-Provence by Niki Gulley

"Pearls of Sunshine," Aix-en-Provence, France ©2020 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 9" x 12" oil painting

Day 3, Provence Art Trek: Aix-en-Provence
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop
with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Just Sold! Today we checked out of our hotel and headed to Provence's cultural hub and Cezanne's home, Aix-en-Provence. After visiting its famous Cours Mirabeau boulevard, lined with cafés and plane trees and its morning produce and flower market, we parted from the photographers and set up our easels at this picturesque fountain courtyard. Having several hours to paint, we thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful day and each painter's unique view of the scene. Some focused on the fountain, others on the architecture and some on the nearby cafés. Everyone's painting turned out great!

Next, we headed deep into the lavender country to our picturesque b and b, where we spent the rest of the trip. And, of course we completed the day with another delicious meal!

"Sun's Bounty III" Palette Knife Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Sun's Bounty III" ©2022 Niki Gulley
24" x 48" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Sun’s Bounty is inspired from the beautiful sunflower fields we visited in Provence, France. The flowers seemed to stretch forever and the color explosion was out of this world! Back in my studio, I worked from a combination of photos, on-site sketches and memories. Painting the sunflowers full-sized in the foreground helps to bring them to life and hopefully transport you to this happy location. Including surprising pops of vivid reds and purples keeps your eye moving throughout the scene, seeing new things each time you look at it, and adds to the joyful feeling.

To purchase, please contact AO5 Gallery in Austin, TX at ao5gallery.com/products/suns-bounty-iii.

"Royal Rows" Lavender Field Painting by Niki Gulley

 Royal Rows ©2021 Niki Gulley

SOLD • 20” x 30” textured mixed media on canvas

Just Sold through the Good Art Company Gallery! Inspired by a trip to Provence, these lavender fields were gorgeous and stretched as far as the eye could see! I wanted to focus on the perfectly planted purple rows, contrasted against the vibrant yellow sunflowers in the distance. I love how those colors pop next to each other. Fluffy clouds drift by in diagonal patterns that mimic the lavender aisles and create a harmony throughout the scene. Perspective lines converge, leading you to this joyful spot and I hope you can smell the amazing aromas and feel your spirits lifted while gazing into this scene.
