"Woodland Adventure" Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

"Woodland Adventure" ©2026 Niki Gulley

18" x 24"" textured oil painting on board

I find being immersed in nature can have such an uplifting effect, and I wanted to share that feeling with you in Woodland Adventure. I chose pure, intense reds and yellows contrasted against autumn greens to create a fall forest that vibrates with color and energy.  I placed the vivid foliage in diagonal sweeping shapes to create a sense of movement, so that you can feel the wind gently rustling the leaves and causing them to dance on a beautiful fall day.

Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley Paints the Italian Riviera

Corniglia ©2025 Niki Gulley

SOLD • 9" x 12" Textured acrylic painting on canvas panel

My husband  and I are so excited to be leading an Art Trek (i.e. a plein air painting and photography workshop) to Cinque Terre, Italy next year. This string of 5 centuries-old seaside villages line the Italian Riviera coastline, dotted by colorful houses and vineyards that cling to steep cliffs. The harbors are filled with fishing boats and restaurants that serve the freshest seafood specialties along with delicious pesto pasta. An awe-inspiring hiking trail links the villages and offers sweeping sea vistas.  So, today I set up along that trail with my easel to capture this beautiful view the picturesque hill town, Corniglia, perched high about the cove.

Voluminous clouds danced by as peaceful waters lapped along the shore. Sprinkle in some vibrant wildflowers and this made for a perfect, uplifting, serene afternoon! May you enjoy the escape with me!

"Winding Water" from the Willow City Loop by Niki Gulley

"Winding Water II"  ©2026 Niki Gulley

16" x 20" textured mixed media painting on canvas panel

Painted on location along the Willow City Loop in Fredericksburg, TX, I was drawn to this tranquil spot, especially as the day was getting hotter. When I started the scene, there were just a few shadows being cast from the trees on the right but they kept growing as I was painting! I liked the rhythm they were creating so I decided to include their patterns and go ahead and chase the light (which is a no no for plein air painters). But there's always exceptions to the rules, right? I hope you enjoy this cool peaceful place as much as I did.

Or, if you are in the Madison, WI area this weekend, I will be exhibiting at Art Fair on the Square.

Painting in the Texas Hill Country with Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Shades of Blue” ©2026 Niki Gulley

24" x 12" textured acrylic painting on canvas

I wanted to capture that beautiful soft light illuminating the lake this morning while accentuating the perky wildflowers in the foreground. It was such a peaceful spot and I wanted that emotion to come through, too. Choosing a light, bright palette not only adds to that calm feeling, but really makes the cheerful blooms pop. A beautiful old gnarly live oak hugs the scene, inviting you to explore the colorful field ahead. I hope you can feel the joy and tranquility of springtime with the wildflowers abloom in the Texas!

“Shades of Blue II” ©2026 Niki Gulley

24" x 12" textured acrylic painting on canvas

"For me, wildflowers are joy-giving. They have enriched my life and fed my soul and given beautiful memories to sustain me."
– Lady Bird Johnson

Surrounded by a sea of blue – Scott captured me in my element here! Not only were the bluebonnets and wildflowers magnificent this year, but I just adore the live oaks, too. Their massive stature, their gnarly, twisting branches and the umbrella of shade they cast, just make me want to paint them over and over again. Rows and rows of cobalt lift your spirits and guide you along the grand old oak. I hope you, too, can enjoy the beauty of Texas in all of its spring glory.
