"Forest's Edge" Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

"Forest's Edge" ©2020 Niki Gulley
36" x 60" textured oil painting on canvas

I love being immersed in nature. After living in a city surrounded by concrete and noise, I find being surrounded by mother nature to be extremely cathartic, peaceful and rejuvenating. In Forest Edge, I wanted to capture those feelings of happiness and tranquility. Working first with thin drippy paint, and then building up thick layers of oil paint with palette knives to achieve extreme dimension, this painting is loaded with movement, energy and color. I hope it lifts your spirits and recharges your batteries while bringing texture, joy and the outdoors inside your home.

"Rhythm Reflections" Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

"Rhythm Reflections" ©2020 Niki Gulley
36" x 60" textured oil painting on canvas

I love being immersed in nature. After living in a city surrounded by concrete and noise, I find being surrounded by mother nature to be extremely cathartic, peaceful and rejuvenating. In Rhythm Reflections, I became fascinated with the mirror reflection on the aspen trees in the water below the horizon line. With the lake surface slightly blurring the individual leaves, patterns started emerging that created a sort of rhythm that I found mesmerizing. Working first with thin drippy paint, and then building up thick layers of oil paint with palette knives to achieve extreme dimension, this painting is loaded with movement, energy and color. Leaving the composition slightly abstracted gives you a chance to form your own contemplative narrative with nature.

“Symphony in Springtime VI" ©2020 Niki Gulley

36" x 36" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

I absolutely love it when I come across a whole field of wildflowers – there is something about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of color that inspires awe and delights your senses. I liked how these rows of poppies and rolling grasses created a gentle harmony, inviting you to wander into the distance, getting lost in the moment. Full of color and hope, may my "Symphony in Springtime" transport you to a happy serene place.

"Symphony in Springtime V" Abstract Wildflower Painting by Niki Gulley

“Symphony in Springtime V" ©2020 Niki Gulley
24" x 24" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

I wanted to show Texas' spring landscape in a completely different way. Making sure not to over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the energy found in nature. Repeating patterns and waves of color create a harmony within the painting, while rendering the bluebonnets and wildflowers along with their surroundings abstractly plays with taking a traditional subject matter and showing it in a contemporary way. With an aura of mystery, late day light touches the tops of the grasses and hills with glimmers of hope.

New Abstract Texas Wildflower Painting by Niki Gulley

“Symphony in Springtime III" ©2020 Niki Gulley
36" x 36" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

In this painting, I wanted to capture the rhythm, color, and density of our bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush and vibrant wildflowers flowing along the grassy rises and falls of the berms in the Texas Hill Country. Making sure not to over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the energy found in nature. Repeating patterns and waves of color create a harmony within the painting, while rendering the blooms and their surroundings abstractly plays with taking a traditional subject matter and showing it in a contemporary way.

New Abstract Bluebonnet and Wildflower Painting by Niki Gulley

“Symphony in Springtime" ©2020 Niki Gulley
36" x 36" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

A few months ago, one of my doctors suggested I try meditation. Not only do I think it's helping with the illnesses, but as a bonus, painting ideas will appear in my head as I'm meditating. So here are some of the new pieces that are flowing out of me. You'll see they're a twist on reality with nature abstracted through color, strokes and texture. I hope they lift you up and create a sense of mystery, leaving interpretation up to your imagination.

Just sold! I wanted to show Texas' spring landscape in a completely different way. With an aura of mystery and the promise of what tomorrow holds, late day light sparkles over the horizon casting its warm glow kissing everything it touches with glimmers of hope. The vague suggestion of bluebonnets and colorful wildflowers peek through the dancing golden tangle, leaving the landscape loose and free so that your imagination can tell its story. May you relish the joy in the beauty of nature, bathing in the moment and looking forward to what tomorrow will bring.

Palette Knife Aspen Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Syncopation" ©2020 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 12" x 24" textured oil on canvas

Just Sold through the Statton Gallery! I loved this brilliant aspen forest with its bright white aspen trunks slicing through all of the vibrant red and yellow foliage, contrasted against the multitude of greens surrounding it. The patterns of the trees created a sort of rhythm and I focused on the placement of the ivory sentinels and strokes in the leaves to add to that feeling of a driving beat. I hope you, too, can feel the energy and joy of being surrounded by nature as autumn is in full swing.

"Standing Witness" Palette Knife Aspen Painting by Niki Gulley

"Standing Witness"©2020 Niki Gulley
16" x 20" textured oil painting

Recently, we visited Santa Fe and to escape the heat we ventured up the Santo de Cristo mountains to cool down among the beautiful, refreshing aspen trees. I was attracted to this grove in particular with their beautiful textured white bark and their proximity and angles to each other. I decided to include the sentinels behind, also, to give you a sense of being surrounded by the peaceful forest. Dappled light casts diagonal shadows and causes the grasses to dance and sparkle. I hope you can feel the serenity of this rejuvenating place.

Recently, we visited Santa Fe and to escape the heat we ventured up the Santo de Cristo mountains to cool down amongst the beautiful, refreshing aspen trees. I was drawn to this meandering path leading through the aspens with its dappled light creating such gorgeous shadows. Having fun capturing all of the different textures with palette knife from the lush grasses to the feathery wildflowers to the peeling bark on the aspen trees, I set out to recreate the peace and beauty of this forest. I hope you, too, can feel the serenity of this rejuvenating place and enjoy an uplifting walk in the woods.

New "Reaching for the Sun" Sunflower Painting by Niki Gulley

"Reaching for the Sun" ©2020 Niki Gulley
24" x 12" textured mixed media painting on canvas

I painted these sunflowers right in my backyard. We patiently awaited as we watched them grow practically 6 inches every day, thinking any minute they would bloom. They were so fun to watch! Blossoms the size of dinner plates, chased the sun and smiled at us from the backyard. I had to go out over the course of several mornings and capture all of that happy beauty. Loaded with texture and energy, these flowers practically spring to life from the canvas!

"Rooted Together" Now Showing at Studio Seven Arts Gallery

"Rooted Together" ©2020 Niki Gulley
24" x 12" textured oil painting on canvas

Rooted Together was inspired from a trip we took to Monet’s Gardens outside of Paris. Being a lover of impressionist paintings, I was awestruck standing in the footsteps of one of my favorite painters! The gardens have been maintained immacuately and I could see exactly where Monet painted his paintings. I’ve always loved pÃ¥urple irises and was particularly drawn to this view with the two irises entangled together. Off in the distance, you can see Monet’s picturesque house with that spectacular view of his garden.

I'm excited to have been invited to exhibit at Studio Seven Arts in Pleasanton, CA. If you'd like to see or find out more details about Rooted Together, please check them out:
