New Ghost Ranch Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Desert Oasis" ©2020 Niki Gulley
18" x 24" textured oil painting

This summer my husband and I were asked to lecture for Southern Methodist University at the campus in Taos. We love the scenery in New Mexico so much that we decided to stay an extra week to paint and photograph. One day we drove towards Ghost Ranch where Georgia O'Keefe lived, stopping at this scenic overlook of the Rio Chama on the way. Loving the setting and the drama the light was creating on the distant rock formations, we decided to stay right there and capture its beauty.  Gentle S curves lead you down the river while shrubbery and mountain peaks create rhythmic patterns adding to the flow of the scene. I hope you, too, feel rejuvenated gazing into this desert oasis.

New "Warm Welcome" Palette Knife Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

"Warm Welcome," Santa Fe
SOLD • 12" x 16" textured oil by Niki Gulley

Just Sold! During a recent trip to Santa Fe, we visited this peaceful little street off Canyon Road where each home is postcard perfect. Between the unique adobe architecture, the dramatic morning light, and the beautiful plantings surrounding each home, it was hard to choose what to paint! I was drawn to this cool old doorway built into the pueblo wall. I loved the oranges of the adobe contrasted against the purples in the various blooming sage plants. Morning light was softly raking across the forms causing the scene to sparkle and create a warm welcome.

New "Road of Promises" Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Road of Promises," Ghost Ranch, NM
16" x 20" textured oil by Niki Gulley

This summer my husband and I were asked to lecture for Southern Methodist University at the campus in Taos. We love the scenery in New Mexico so much that we decided to stay an extra week to paint and photograph. One day we drove out to Ghost Ranch where Georgia O'Keefe lived. I understand why she moved there! The scenery and dramatic lighting are stunning.

That afternoon I decided to paint in another direction, attracted to the quickly moving fluffy clouds over the distant mountains and the lure of the road pulling me into the landscape. In the distance, the lake beckons as an oasis amongst the desert scenery. Working with palette knife, I set out to capture all of the different textures from the sandy foreground to the bushy sagebrush and from jagged rocks to gnarly shrubbery. I hope you, too, can feel the pull of the road of promises.

New Ghost Ranch Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Ghost Ranch Vista"
16" x 20" textured oil by Niki Gulley

This summer my husband and I were asked to lecture for Southern Methodist University at the campus in Taos. We love the scenery in New Mexico so much that we decided to stay an extra week to paint and photograph. One day we drove out to Ghost Ranch where Georgia O'Keefe lived. I understand why she moved there! The desert scenery is stunning. I set out to capture this beautiful mountain with its craggy rock formations with the aqua sage brush in the foreground. I loved the contrast of the orange cliffs against the cool grasses, bushes and sky and the deep purple shadows causing the shapes to pop. Painted with palette knife and thick paint, this piece is loaded with textured, color and energy.

New Summer Aspen Tree Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

"Aspen Skyscrapers" ©2018 Niki Gulley
Textured oil painting • 24" x 18"

Recently, we visited Santa Fe and to escape the heat we ventured up the Santo de Cristo mountains to cool down amongst the beautiful, refreshing aspen trees. In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up in into the treetops and the heavens above. Choosing calming greens against a lavender-blue peaceful sky and arranging the aspens so that they meet in the middle, suggests a feeling of togetherness. While organizing the outlying trees in a circular pattern and using thick, curving brushstrokes, creates a joyful, playful mood.

"Meandering Journey"
16" x 20" textured oil by Niki Gulley

Recently, we visited Santa Fe and to escape the heat we ventured up the Santo de Cristo mountains to cool down amongst the beautiful, refreshing aspen trees. I was drawn to this meandering path leading through the aspens with its dappled light creating such gorgeous shadows. Having fun capturing all of the different textures with palette knife from the lush grasses to the feathery wildflowers to the peeling bark on the aspen trees, I set out to recreate the peace and beauty of this forest. I hope you, too, can feel the serenity of this rejuvenating place and enjoy an uplifting walk in the woods.

SOLD • 9" x 12" textured oil painting by Niki Gulley

Just Sold! With so much beautiful scenery, it was hard to decide on a subject, but a couple of the painters chose this iconic view of the windmills and bleached architecture contrasted against the cobalt blue skies and waters below. Meanwhile the photographers climbed every nook and cranny in town in search for the perfect shot, and others chose to shop or relax with a snack, soaking in the gorgeous view over the caldera.

New "Cross Hatch" Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

"Cross Hatch"
12" x 18" textured oil by Niki Gulley

Recently, we visited Santa Fe and to escape the heat we ventured up the Santo de Cristo mountains to cool down amongst the beautiful, refreshing aspen trees. I was attracted to this grouping of trunks in particular with their beautiful textured white bark and their proximity and angles to each other. Their verticality offset by the horizontal logs on the ground made for an interesting composition. On this piece, I decided to pull in tight on the trunks, really focusing on the peeling bark and gnarled knots. I chose to include just a sliver of the sentinels behind to give you a sense of being surrounded by the peaceful forest and accentuating the rhythm in the upright trunks. Pops of red add to the joy and energy of the moment. I hope you, too, can feel the serenity of this rejuvenating place.

New "Standing Witness" Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

"Standing Witness"
16" x 20" textured oil by Niki Gulley

Recently, we visited Santa Fe and to escape the heat we ventured up the Santo de Cristo mountains to cool down amongst the beautiful, refreshing aspen trees. I was attracted to this grove in particular with their beautiful textured white bark and their proximity and angles to each other. I decided to include the sentinels behind, also, to give you a sense of being surrounded by the peaceful forest. Dappled light casts diagonal shadows and causes the grasses to dance and sparkle. I hope you can feel the serenity of this rejuvenating place.

"Rhythmic Waters" Palette Knife Seashore painting by Niki Gulley

"Rhythmic Waters" ©2018 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 9" x 12" textured oil painting

Just sold! I wanted this painting to be about the power of the ocean to lift your spirits. Painting this piece on location, I was hoping you could feel the ocean tides lapping on the shore and hear the rhythmic, soothing sounds of the waves cresting and falling like I was experiencing while painting it. Whenever I visit the beach I always feel rejuvenated, and I hope I’ve translated that onto the canvas for you to experience it, too.

New "Ruby Bouquet" Poppy Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Ruby Bouquet" ©2018 Niki Gulley
30" x 40” textured oil painting

I absolutely love it when I come across a whole field of wildflowers – there is something about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of color that inspires awe and delights your senses. So when my husband and I came across this gorgeous ruby carpet in Tuscany we had to stop and capture the moment. I liked how the rows of poppies and rolling hills created a gentle harmony leading you to the quintessential stone farmhouse in the distance. I hope you, too, can feel the joy of a perfect spring day in Tuscany!
