"Winter Shadows" by Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley

"Winter Shadows" ©2026 Niki Gulley
12" x 16" textured oil painting • Glenrose, TX

Painted on location in Glen Rose, Texas with the company of my Outdoor Painters Society, I chose to paint the oldest house in town. It was so full of character and charm and I loved the big huge front porch and white-washed picket fence. The pergola welcomes you to step right in and relax on a rocking chair, visiting with neighbors and loved ones. Dramatic lighting and shadows add to the warmth of the moment.

"Barn at LBJ Ranch" Oil Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

"Barn at LBJ Ranch"  ©2022 Niki Gulley •  9" x 12" palette knife oil painting

I created this while on a painting competition for the American Impressionists Society which was held in Fredericksburg, TX this spring. We were open to painting anything that we would like and I ran across this beautiful red barn nestled in amongst the massive, gnarly trees on the LBJ Ranch and just couldn't resist painting it.

If you're interested in purchasing this painting or seeing the texture in larger detail, just follow this link   https://www.nikigulley.com/barn-at-lbj-ranch/.

"Weathered Cisterns" Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Weathered Cisterns" ©2022 Niki Gulley
18" x 12" textured oil painting • Grapevine, TX

I painted these water tanks and grain mill in the distance recently in Grapevine, TX on a bright, crisp winter morning. I loved the colorful rust contrasting against the blue-grays of the metal containers, and I worked with thick layers of oil paint and my palette knife to capture that texture. The whole scene had an industrial feel to it, so I chose to include the telephone pole and wires in the foreground to set that feel and also lead you into the scene. Adding a touch of whimsy to an otherwise hardened scene, I like the play of recent man made touches juxtaposed against 19th and 20th century modern technology.

"Diagonal Shadows" - New White Rock Lake Painting by Niki Gulley

“Diagonal Shadows” White Rock Lake ©2015 Niki Gulley
12” x 24” oil on canvas

Sunset draws lengthening shadows across the grassy waters edge at Sunset Bay, White Rock. The lake shimmers in the evening glow as sky high above fills with deep blues and before you the soft, moody colors stretch out, long lines beckoning you into the complex diagonal composition. Rich texture models the leaves, branches and tree trunk rimmed in the sunset and shadow. Vivid masses of color form the foliage on the opposite bank, fall at its peak. The long cast shadows draw you into the tranquil landscape and the peaceful, dreamy sunset at White Rock Lake.

Bluebonnets & Texas Wildflowers painting by Niki Gulley

"Texas Treats IV" ©2011 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 12" x 12" oil painting on canvas

Just Sold! I painted these Texas bluebonnets & Indian Blanket with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve extreme texture so that the image comes to life and leaps off the canvas! In this wildflower painting series, I've painted the scene around the edges of the canvas on 1 1/2" deep stretcher bars so that the paintings can be hung without a frame for a unique sculptural effect.
