Just Sold! My husband and I both LOVE waterfalls, and we try to visit them whenever we can find them on our adventures. This beautiful cascade turned out to be right in my husband's backyard where he grew up. We were in New York visiting his hometown, and having grown up in a city, I couldn't believe this gorgeous spectacle was right outside his door! Not far from Niagara falls, this massive water flow crashed and glided along the intricate rock formations rushing into the river far below. The sound of water rushing was so energetic and peaceful at the same time, and I wanted to capture that invigorating feeling in my painting. Setting up my easel at its base, I set out to recreate the energy and flow of the cascades while showing some of the lush vegetation surrounding them. Creating strokes in diagonal sweeping shapes to enhance that feeling of movement and rhythm, I hope you, too, can hear the flowing water's music and feel the gentle spray from its mist.

Arching over, bending into the quiet waters, a tree arches into the scene – encompassing, embracing. This painting captures the dreamy reflections and tranquil landscape of one of my favorite spots to paint on location near my home. It is painted in the traditional plein air oil manner, incorporating some heavy texture with palette knife.

Slovenia and Croatia Art Trek - Day 4

Just Sold! For our next adventure on our Slovenia and Croatia Art Trek, we crossed back over the border into Slovenia again to land at the Idyllic town of Bled. Set on a peaceful, picturesque lake, the town is almost like a fairytale come to life.

That evening, we visited Bled Castle, perched above town with incredible views of the area spreading out below. After dining on a gourmet dinner there with fellow Trekkers and our new friends, we retired full and happy that night!

Afternoon location: Ross Castle, Killarney

Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

On the last afternoon of our Ireland Art Trek, we visited Ross Castle. While the photographers explored the castle and grounds, the painters set up their easels to capture this majestic view of the castle and lake. Although we didn't have enough time to finish, you can get idea of the overall scene and the fast moving clouds with a tiny patch of blue sky poking through. Afterwards, we enjoyed a peaceful boat tour of the lake and came back to our home base, to share our photos and paintings of our trip. What a great way to end a wonderful Art Trek with new friends!

Cinque Terre and Lake Como Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Day 1: Monterosso / the 5 Village Hike

Just Sold! We were greeted in Cinque Terre with gorgeous sunny weather, so the photographers and tourists headed out on our first morning on the 5 mile scenic hike high above, linking the five cities of the Cinque Terre, taking in breathtaking scenery along the way. With our paint gear, we opted to stay in Monterosso and capture this beautiful quiet courtyard, with its soft dappled light and lovely plantings.

That evening we connected with the hikers and enjoyed a delicious dinner of fresh caught seafood, local pesto and pasta, and tasty Italian wine. A great end to a perfect first day!

Just Sold! On the 7th day of Ireland Art Trek, we visited the magnificent Muckross House and Gardens, a mansion built in the 1800s. With acres of woodland, gardens and lakeside views, the photographers and tourists explored while us painters set up our easels in front of the manor house and colorful formal gardens. A challenging scene to capture with so much going on, we did our best to set the scene on our 9x12 canvases.

Painting Ireland's Dingle Peninsula with Niki Gulley

After teaching our Ireland Art Trek, my husband and I stayed a couple of extra days on the Dingle Peninsula on the west coast of Ireland. That day I chose to pull in tight on my composition of these jagged rocks and the waves crashing against them. Having fun creating the uneven textures with the palette knife, I hope you can feel the sound of the water rises and falling as it rushes against the cliffs.

For our next Iceland adventure, you guessed it - we visited another waterfall! Today the breeze was picking up again, so we aimed the car towards the falls and I painted from the front seat while the wind rocked our car and Scott to sleep. Meanwhile, I set out to capture the gorgeous falls with all of their power and glory. Using diagonal strokes again to capture the energy and strength of the cascades, I also wanted to show the mountains they were tumbling over and a sliver of the river in the distance as the water flowed onward. Dramatic clouds drift by, adding to the rhythm and emotion of this special place.

One of the highlights of our Iceland trip was to visit the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. Completely otherworldly, large chunks of blue ice break and float along the water's surface while the massive glacier looms in the distance. My favorite color being aqua, I had to capture all of the gorgeous blues in the water and the ice. While a little overcast, the sun was able to peak through the clouds and create a dreamlike sunset casting a golden tint across the lagoon. A magical moment!

Andalusia, Spain Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Day 1 - Toledo, Spain: Andalusia Art Trek

Just Sold! On the first full day of our Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop that my husband, Scott Williams, and I led in southern Spain, the painters set up their easels at this gorgeous overlook of the river below and the San Martin bridge built in the 14th century. Meanwhile the photographers and tourists visited the major sites in the city from Medieval synagogues, churches and mosques to wandering the labyrinth of streets and shops. Meeting up for lunch, we dined al fresco on paella, fresh salads and stews, while we swapped experiences from our morning.

Day 3:  TUSCANY ART TREK - Siena

Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

On the third day of our Tuscany Art Trek, we visited the Medieval hill town of Siena, with its incredible marble Duomo, great people-watching plaza, and interesting alleyways radiating out from the campo with something new to discover around every turn. While some of our group shopped, some photographed and others relaxed on the square, I set up in one of the quiet cobble streets to capture the textures of these ancient walls and mood of this unique city. For dinner that night, we treated ourselves to a delicious home-made Italian meal of pastas, truffles, pecorino cheese and some amazing red wine!

Just Sold! Rising before the crack of dawn to enjoy St. Mark's Square before the mad rush during Carnivalé, I set up my easel along the lagoon to capture the iconic scenery and gorgeous sunrise. Luckily Mother Nature did not disappoint and the sky was filled with magical pinks, golds and oranges. I love the stack of gondolas resting along the shore just waiting to be taken out for ride. Working quickly to capture the light as it sparkles against the water, I created this piece with palette knife and a lot of oil paint so that it is filled with texture, color and movement.

On this morning in Tuscany, we decided to get up really early so that we could capture sunrise over this beautiful valley. The hills were surrounded by a layer of mist that created this ethereal, peaceful quality to the morning. I really liked how the fog accentuated the miles and miles of rolling landscape, perfectly off-setting the villa surrounded by cypress and olive groves in the foreground. While I’m not usually an early morning person, this turned out to be a very inspiring moment!
