New "Oldest House in Glen Rose" by Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley

"Oldest House in Glen Rose" ©2019 Niki Gulley
12" x 16" textured oil painting • Glenrose, TX

Painted on location in Glen Rose, Texas with the company of my Outdoor Painters Society, I chose to paint the oldest house in town. It was so full of character and charm and I loved the big huge front porch and white-washed picket fence. The pergola welcomes you to step right in and relax on a rocking chair, visiting with neighbors and loved ones. Dramatic lighting and shadows add to the warmth of the moment.

"Weathered Cisterns" Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Weathered Cisterns" ©2019 Niki Gulley
18" x 12" textured oil painting • Grapevine, TX

I painted these water tanks and grain mill in the distance recently in Grapevine, TX on a bright, crisp winter morning. I loved the colorful rust contrasting against the blue-grays of the metal containers, and I worked with thick layers of oil paint and my palette knife to capture that texture. The whole scene had an industrial feel to it, so I chose to include the telephone pole and wires in the foreground to set that feel and also lead you into the scene. Adding a touch of whimsy to an otherwise hardened scene, I like the play of recent man made touches juxtaposed against 19th and 20th century modern technology.

New Rooftop Overlook from Tuscany by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

Montepulciano ©2019 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 12" x 16" textured oil painting

Just Sold!  During our Tuscany Foodie Trek, we headed to the wine town of Montepulciano. Perched atop a giant hill with beautiful views of the surrounding vineyards below, I set up my easel at this breathtaking overlook while the rest of our group visited wineries or took a cooking class with a local chef at a nearby award-winning restaurant. The view of the valley below is gorgeous with miles of olive groves and vineyards stretching to the horizon. I chose to paint the this puzzle of rooftops and buildings stacked in the foreground with the lush valley stretching to infinity in the distance.  I hope you enjoy the morning escape to Tuscany!

After lunch, we visited a winery nearby to sample their Rossos, Vino Nobiles and the delicious sweet dessert wine, Vin Santo. Full from the local meats and cheeses and tasty red wines, we headed back to the villa for a quiet night of relaxing and soaking in the evening scenery.

“Nature's Ascension” ©2019 Niki Gulley
16" x 12” textured oil on painting

I created "Nature's Ascension" on a beautiful day last fall at one of my favorite painting spots near our home. I was attracted to the colorful dappled light raking across these steps and hillside, beckoning you to ascend. Meanwhile this majestic sycamore stands tall in its fall glory, also inviting you into the distance to discover what's beyond. Painted with palette knife and thick oil paint, this landscape is filled with color, movement and energy!

Vermont Fall Foliage Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams
Day 2: Woodstock

On the second day of our New England Fall Foliage Art Trek that my husband and I led, we decided to paint right at our b and b because the grounds were so beautiful. Meanwhile the photographers and tourists, visited the nearby towns to photograph covered bridges, wooden barns and the gorgeous fall foliage. I decided to paint this regal birch tree next to our inn. I liked how it was perched on top if this hill, extending towards the sky. The vibrant yellows and orange leaves vibrated with energy against the clear blue sky, and I wanted to capture that feeling on my canvas. What a great way to spend the day!

Painting and Photographing in Stowe, VT with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

"Into the Woods III"  ©2019 Niki Gulley
• 9" x 12" textured oil painting

Vermont Fall Foliage Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams
Stowe, VT

On the fourth day of our New England Fall Foliage Art Trek, we headed to the top of Stowe Mountain to explore. The painters set out to capture this gorgeous forest ablaze with color. I loved the split rail fence lining the walkway. Meanwhile, the photographers and tourists ventured on foot through the forest and then continued to explore by car the surrounding area, picking us up for lunch on their return.

That afternoon we visited local cheese and cider companies tasting Vermont's treats. In the evening we enjoyed viewing everyone's paintings and watching the photographers' slide shows from the week. Afterwards we delighted in one last dinner together. A great treat with new friends after a fun-filled day!

"Into the Woods II" by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Into the Woods II" ©2019 Niki Gulley
9" x 12" textured oil painting

Vermont Fall Foliage Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams
Stowe, VT

Every day we were in New England, we'd drive through this gorgeous fall canopy. So one morning when the light was sparkling through the leaves, I decided to set my easel up along the road to capture its beauty and mystery. I loved the curve of the road beckoning you into the autumn glow. The dappled light also created a warmth leading your eye through the painting, onto the journey ahead.

"Relaxation Awaits II" by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Relaxation Awaits II" • 9" x 12" textured oil painting
SOLD •  ©2019 Niki Gulley

Vermont Fall Foliage Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams
Day 5 - Stowe, VT

Inspired and created on the last day of our New England Fall Foliage Art Trek that my husband, Scott Williams, and I taught. We painters stayed just outside our B&B to capture the beautiful views of fall foliage, in all its splendor. I decided to paint this view out back, since I'd been admiring it every day of the trip. It was a gorgeous morning with vibrant fall colors frosting the flora. This set of Adirondack chairs was so inviting. The scene just welcoming me to sit, relax and enjoy the view. Long side lighting created dramatic shadows and a glow illuminated the grasses. I hope you too can escape and rejuvenate with me!

While we painted, everyone else went into Stowe to shop, explore, and photograph some more. After a wonderful morning and lunch we said our good-byes and hoped to meet again soon on a future Art Trek.

New "Resting Spot" Oil Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“Resting Spot” ©2019 Niki Gulley
14" x 11” textured oil on painting

I painted "Resting Spot" on location in East Texas amongst the piney woods. This scene was so peaceful and I liked how the evergreens provided shade, keeping the warm Texas sun at bay. One lone boat sits on the shoreline, inviting you to sit down and row across the tranquil lake. I hope this piece transports you to a quiet weekend escape, surrounded by nature, with not a care in the world.

From our travels, I have become fascinated with the textures, hues and extreme variety we encounter in different terrains. New "Freedom II" Palette Knife Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

“Freedom II" ©2019 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 20" x 30" textured oil painting

Just Delivered! I was recently asked to create this whimsical girl on the swing for a commission by someone who had scene a similar painting of a little boy that I had painted hanging in one of my collector's homes. I was so thrilled to paint this for her! Filled with joy and movement, I hope "Freedom II" captures the spirit of swinging from sturdy branches on a lazy summer day. Using swirling shapes and strokes, in addition to the circular composition, all help to create the energy of the moment while fun pops of color add to the excitement. Life-size bare feet swing toward you adding to the fun of the moment. Set against rolling hills with home in the distance, you can fly high and soar on a dream.

New "Through the Keyhole" Palette Knife Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Through the Keyhole” ©2019 Niki Gulley
20” x 16” textured oil painting

I love the twisting, textured limbs of old oak trees, and the way these two branches formed a keyhole view of the forest beyond was fascinating. Arching the branches upward suggests a touch of whimsey like climbing a tree when you’re a kid. Loaded with texture and surprising pops of color, I hope you, too, are transported to an enchanted place filled with hope and wonder.

New "If a tree Falls" Textured Oil Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

"If a Tree Falls" ©2019 Niki Gulley
24" x 18" Textured oil painting

I always love going to Turtle Creek, the natural oasis the city has created in the middle of Dallas. This painting was inspired from a time when you could actually climb down the rocks and enjoy the beautiful stream from below, being completely isolated from city noise and housing. I was drawn to these large abstract sweeping patterns of the water and land meeting with just a trickle of light illuminating the foliage in the distance and one lone trunk that has fallen.

"Chasing Dragons" Oil Painting from Slovenia by Niki Gulley

"Chasing Dragons," Ljubljana ©2018 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 7" x 5" textured oil painting

Slovenia and Croatia Art Trek - Day 1
Led by Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Just Sold! This summer, my husband, Scott Williams, and I led an Art Trek to Slovenia and Croatia where we taught photography, painting and showed the rest of our group who weren't painting or photographing some of the highlights in those countries. It was an amazing trip, and everyone said it was probably two of their favorite countries they'd ever visited!

On our first day, we arrived in Ljubljana, the capitol of Slovenia. The city is lined with dragons everywhere since they are the symbol for the city and they even have a Dragonolgy course through the local college! We chose to paint their famous Dragon Bridge while the photographers shot and explored the city. Above is one of the bronze creatures that greet you as you're crossing the bridge.

That afternoon we gave everyone free time to explore the castle, the beautiful city streets and architecture, shop, etc. and that evening we gathered for an amazing meal at their Michelin rated restaurant. A perfect ending to a wonderful day!
