New "Gondola Ride" Oil Painting by Palette Knife Painter Niki Gulley

"Gondola Ride," Venice ©2019 Niki Gulley
12" x 9" oil painting

I painted this piece on location during our Art Trek we taught in Venice while their infamous Carnival celebration was taking place. Since St. Mark's Square can get overrun with tourists, we chose to set up our easels along a side street to enjoy the peacefulness and beauty of the city. I love the magical light that comes flooding in through the canals and is so distinctive of Venice. The stone bridge with its iron railing sets a perfect backdrop to the gondolier rowing his enchanted passengers through the romantic back canals.

New "Rainbow of Shade" Palette Knife Painting from Cinque Terre by Niki Gulley

"Rainbow of Shade," Vernazza ©2019 Niki Gulley
9" x 12" Textured oil painting

Cinque Terre and Lake Como Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams
Day3 - Vernazza

Painted on location, I loved the colorful array of large umbrellas shading all of the café tables in Vernazza, Italy. Above someone has left their shutters open to catch the cool breeze and finish drying that one last towel on the line. Below multi-colored boats await for their owners to float out to sea. I hope I can transport you to this festive spot so that you can dine al fresco and enjoy the relaxing pace.

"Painted Harbor" Palette Knife Painting from Portree, Scotland by Niki Gulley

"Painted Harbor" ©2019 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 9" x 12” textured oil painting

Scotland Art Trek – Days 3 and 4: Isle of Skye - Portree
Led by Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Just Sold! Following our two days in Edinburgh, we drove to the Isle of Skye for our next stop on our Scotland Art Trek. Making home base in the picturesque town of Portree, we checked in that night, grabbed a delicious dinner and crashed so that we could get an early start the next day. We spent that morning exploring the unique, other-worldly, lush area known as Fairy Glen. Returning to Portree for lunch, the weather cleared just in time for us to start painting and photographing. We set up our easels at this postcard-perfect overlook of the colorful painted harbor below. Meanwhile the photographers visited Old Man of Storr to hike up to the amazing overlook and capture Isle of Skye's unique beauty. That evening we reconnected for an amazing dinner and a perfect end to the day.

Part of our group at the Fairy Glen.

Nighttime in St. Mark's Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

"Nighttime in St. Mark's," Venice ©2019 Niki Gulley
9" x 12" textured oil painting

Venice is one of the most romantic cities I’ve visited, and at night it is especially dreamy, quieting down from the tourist traffic and filled with sparkle and energy.  In St. Mark’s Square, you can hear the sounds of live music while couples dine al fresco or stroll through the dimly lit open corridors. Gorgeous marble tile floors line the walkways while golden arches frame the iconic views. I wanted to capture that magical feeling and transport you back to fond memories of your Venetian vacation.

"House on a Hill" Palette Knife Painting from Cinque Terre, Italy by Niki Gulley

"House on a Hill," Vernazza ©2019 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 12" x 9" Textured oil painting

Just Sold! When we arrived in Vernazza during our Art Trek my husband and I taught, the photographers and tourists took off exploring the town and scenic overlooks above while the painters set up their easels near the harbor to capture the beautiful golden late afternoon light. Right after sunset, Scott took the photographers to shoot the dreamy blue light and glow of the city colors and we met up for a delicious dinner of locally caught fish, pastas and regional wine. Full and happy, we rode the train back to Monterosso and crashed that evening after a fun-filled day.

"Morning Shadows," Provence by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Morning Shadows," Provence ©2019 Niki Gulley
12" x 9" textured oil painting

On the first night of our Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop that my husband, Scott Williams, and I led in southern France, we arrived at our B and B and went into town that evening for a wine tasting and amazing dinner at a Michelin-star restaurant. The food was out of this world, the weather was perfect for dining outside, and our new group was great company!

The next morning, our painters stayed at our b and b and painted right there since the grounds were so beautiful. The light raking across the balcony and shutters was so dramatic, and I loved how the gnarly trees framed the composition to make a window within a window. Meanwhile, the photographers visited a nearby 11th century Abbey and took some incredible photographs. We met up later that day and headed to the nearby town of Arles for lunch.

"Diagonal Patterns" Palette Knife Lavender Field Painting by Niki Gulley

"Diagonal Patterns," Provence ©2018 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 9" x 12" textured oil painting

Just sold through the Good Art Company Gallery! I painted "Diagonal Patterns" on location in Provence during our Plein Air Painting and Photography Art Trek Workshop my husband and I led in France. The lavender fields were amazing, and stretched as far as the eye could see! I wanted to focus on these perfectly planted purple rows, contrasted against the vibrant yellow sunflowers in the distance. I loved how those colors popped next to each other! I chose to lower the horizon line so that I could include these amazing clouds drifting by in diagonal patterns that mimicked the lavender aisles.  That also gave the painting an idea of space so that you could sense the fragrant purple beauties stretching for miles. Painted with palette knife and thick oil paint, the final image is loaded with color, texture and movement!

New "Sunrise in St. Mark's Square" Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Sunrise in St. Mark's Square" Venice ©2019 Niki Gulley
12" x 16" textured oil painting

I painted this piece on location in Venice during our Art Trek we taught in Venice while their infamous Carnival celebration was taking place. Since St. Mark's Square can get overrun with tourists, we chose to get up with sunrise to enjoy the beauty of the city and the peacefulness of those early morning hours. I love the magical light that comes flooding in from the lagoon and is so distinctive of Venice. Fortunately, I got set up in time to capture the glow from the gas lamps, too, before they went out as daylight approached, adding to the mysterious quality of the plaza. Against a backdrop of the Doge's Palace, a few people stroll across the square and signal the energy of the day that is to come.

New "Valley Overlook" Tuscany Palette Knife Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

"Valley Overlook," Tuscany ©2019 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 10" x 20" textured oil painting

Just Sold!  During our Tuscany Foodie Trek, we headed to the wine town of Montepulciano. Perched atop a giant hill with beautiful views of the surrounding vineyards below, I set up my easel at this breathtaking overlook while the rest of our group visited wineries or took a cooking class with a local chef at a nearby award-winning restaurant. The view of the valley below is gorgeous with miles of olive groves and vineyards stretching to the horizon. I chose to paint the vertical puzzle of rooftops and buildings stacked in the foreground with the lush valley stretching to infinity in the distance. You can see a sliver of the blue-domed duomo below set amid the rolling hills and perfectly planted rows about to be harvested. I hope you enjoy the morning escape to Tuscany!

After lunch, we visited a winery nearby to sample their Rossos, Vino Nobiles and the delicious sweet dessert wine, Vin Santo. Full from the local meats and cheeses and tasty red wines, we headed back to the villa for a quiet night of relaxing and soaking in the evening scenery.

New "Flowing into Autumn" Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

"Flowing into Autumn" ©2019 Niki Gulley
30" x 48" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

I created "Flowing into Autumn" with many layers of paint, starting with a swirling thin application to form the tangled underbrush and flowing current to thick impasto strokes for texture and energy in the foliage and trunks. Water rushes downstream as autumn leaves dance in the gentle breeze. I hope you experience a feeling of peace and warmth being immersed in the beauty of nature, letting all of your cares drift away.

New "Forest's Edge" Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

"Forest's Edge" ©2019 Niki Gulley
36" x 60" textured oil painting on canvas

I love being immersed in nature. After living in a city surrounded by concrete and noise, I find being surrounded by mother nature to be extremely cathartic, peaceful and rejuvenating. In Forest Edge, I wanted to capture those feelings of happiness and tranquility. Working first with thin drippy paint, and then building up thick layers of oil paint with palette knives to achieve extreme dimension, this painting is loaded with movement, energy and color. I hope it lifts your spirits and recharges your batteries while bringing texture, joy and the outdoors inside your home.

New "Sun's Bounty III" Palette Knife Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Sun's Bounty III" ©2019 Niki Gulley
24" x 48" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Sun’s Bounty is inspired from the beautiful sunflower fields we visited in Provence, France. The flowers seemed to stretch forever and the color explosion was out of this world! Back in my studio, I worked from a combination of photos, on-site sketchesand memories. Painting the sunflowers full-sized in the foreground helps to bring them to life and hopefully transport you to this happy location. Including surprising pops of vivid reds and purples keeps your eye moving throughout the scene, seeing new things each time you look at it, and adds to the joyful feeling.

New "Evolving Seasons" Quadriptych Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Evolving Seasons" ©2019 by Niki Gulley
Four 48" x 36" textured oil painting to form a 48" x 144" quadriptych

I wanted to create a large horizontal quadriptych, or four piece painting, that would flow from one season to the next to show the beauty of the forest throughout the year. Working on such a large scale invites you to step right into the scene and take a walk through the woods, enjoying all of the peace and joy that nature has to offer.

Here you can see all four paintings in a row, flowing from spring to summer and fall to winter. Rather than show the same exact scene at four different times of year, I decided I would rather show one long forest evolving from one season to the next to create a better harmony across the canvases. From the ground gently undulating underneath, to the pine trees flowing from canvas to canvas, to the rhythm created from aspens and oaks repeating, to the foliage and pops of color emerging and drifting into the distance, all elements are designed to add to the flowing symphony in "Evolving Seasons.
