"Marching into Autumn II" Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

"Marching into Autumn II" ©2019 Niki Gulley
12" x 24" textured oil on canvas

I loved this brilliant aspen forest with its bright white aspen trunks slicing through all of the vibrant red and yellow foliage, contrasted against the multitude of greens surrounding it. The patterns of the trees created a sort of rhythm and I focused on the placement of the ivory sentinels and strokes in the leaves to add to that feeling of a driving beat. I hope you, too, can feel the energy and joy of being surrounded by nature as autumn is in full swing.

"Autumn Concerto II" by Niki Gulley Available at Seaside Gallery

"Autumn Concerto II" ©2018 Niki Gulley
16" x 20" textured oil painting

I painted these colorful birch trees on location with the fall hues emerging in all of their glory. I loved this grove of trunks that twisted and turned, slicing bright white through the tangle of autumn leaves. Painted over several mornings, the air was crisp but the sun made for beautiful painting conditions that illuminated the subject and warmed the air. I hope you, too, can feel the thrill of being surrounded by nature on a perfect fall day.

New "Aspiring Dreams" Fall Foliage Treetops by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Aspiring Dreams"  ©2019 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 20" x 16" textured oil painting

Just sold! Painted on location, I was drawn to the striking reds and oranges of the maple treetops contrasted against the vivid turquoise blue sky. There was so much energy in the colors and the breeze blowing through the leaves, that I had to capture that feeling. Dappled light rakes across the tree trunks and illuminates flickering leaves as they catch the sunlight. Using diagonal strokes and a lot of paint with my palette knife, this piece is filled with joy, color and movement.

"Reclining Thoughts" Textured Aspen Tree painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“Reclining Thoughts” ©2019 Niki Gulley
40" x 30” textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

In this painting, I wanted you to you to experience the joy of looking up into the treetops – just like you did when you were a kid. Lying on the ground, not a care in the world, you gaze in wonderment as the clouds drift by. Choosing warm yellows, reds and greens and utilizing thick chunky staccato strokes add to that childlike whimsy and I hope you are transported back to a happy, carefree time and place.

Last Day, Provence Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

"Cascading Roses" ©2019 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 9" x 12" textured oil painting by Niki Gulley

Day 6, Provence Art Trek:
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop
with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Just Sold! On the last day of our Provence Art Trek, we decided to stay right at our b and b to paint since it was so beautiful. Meanwhile the photographers explored the nearby area and others just relaxed by the pool. Choosing what to paint was a challenge since the grounds are so picturesque. Myself and another painter set up our easels by this lovely courtyard, with this stately tree surrounded by cascading roses, while another chose to paint lavender lined walkway and another set up by the ancient Roman bridge on the back of the property. It was a gorgeous morning and everyone's paintings turned out great!

That evening we gathered for a final critique and "show and tell" from the trip. The photographers presented their best images in a slide show and provided us with happy memories from the trip, while opening our eyes to creative possibilities we never considered. The painters showed off their talented creations from each day of the trip and swapped ideas of which aspects they liked best.

For dinner that night, we gathered for one more delicious meal of escargot, filet crusted in mushrooms and chocolate volcano cake washed down with some amazing red wine. Having formed new friendships and enjoyed wonderful memories from the trip, our Provence Art Trek had come to a bittersweet end.

New "Bundle of Sunshine" Sunflower Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

"Bundle of Sunshine" ©2019 Niki Gulley
24" x 12" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas, framed in an espresso floater frame

I was awestruck by these massive fields of sunflowers blooming in Provence. Seeing this brilliant carpet of gold, with its sea of faces smiling towards the sun, just made me feel happy and I wanted you to experience that joy, too. Exaggerating the tile-roofed house in the distance also adds to that cheerful, whimsical mood of feeling content and like you’ve found your home. Created with palette knife and oil paint, “Bundle of Sunshine” practically leaps off the canvas and comes to life with its vibrant yellow petals and extremely thick three-dimensional oil paint.

"Bundle of Sunshine" along with several of my contemporary impressionistic landscape paintings are available through my gallery, the Good Art Company, in Fredericksburg, TX at goodartcompany.com/gacart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=25&sort=20a&page=1&z.

New "Purple Majesty" Lavender field by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Purple Majesty" ©2019 Niki Gulley
20" x 30" textured oil painting

The lavender fields in Provence are incredible – perfectly manicured rows and rows of an explosion of violet as far as the eye can see. Rippling purple columns draw your eye to the lone stone farmhouse in the distance. Meanwhile the sun starts setting through the clouds spanning across the sky in rhythmic waves, mirroring the lavender shapes below and creating a flowing harmony. Perspective lines converge, leading you to this joyful spot and I hope you can smell the amazing aromas and feel your spirits lifted while gazing into this scene!

Visiting the Alhambra Palace with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Day 3 - Granada, Spain: Andalusia Art Trek
"Morning Shadows in the Rose Garden" • 12" x 9" oil painting by Niki Gulley

Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop Led by Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

On the third day of our Spain Art Trek, we visited the Alhambra palace, one of the world’s true architectural marvels and the seat of power from Moorish to Christian rule, dating back to the 14th century. This stunning fortress is the culmination of Moorish design and has some of the best maintained late-Medieval gardens. The Generalife grounds were so gorgeous, bursting with cascading roses and dramatically lit pathways that we set up our easels there to paint while the photographers and tourists toured more of the grounds. Later that day, we met for lunch and continued our tour of the Alcazar.

Part of our Art Trek group in front of the Alhambra Palace.

"Rhapsody in Bloom II" Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Rhapsody in Bloom II" ©2019 Niki Gulley
20" x 20" textured oil painting

I painted these cheerful tulips from life in my backyard garden. With all of our rain this year, I had a bumper crop and wanted to capture the joy I felt seeing them signaling that winter was finally over and spring had begun! Created with palette knife and thick paint, this piece is bursting with color and texture. Blurring out the background, you can focus on each individual flower. Creating a circular composition within the square format creates a harmony and flow, while unblended diagonal marks add to the energy and happiness of the moment. I hope these tulips brighten your day and lift your spirits, too.

New Tuscany Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

"Peaceful Pursuit," Tuscany ©2019 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 30" x 48” textured oil painting on gallery wrap canvas

Just Sold through the Good Art Company Gallery! This painting is inspired from a trip to Tuscany we took a few years ago when my husband, who is a professional photographer, and I spent about a week scouring every inch of the countryside for the best poppy fields and views. I was particularly drawn to this peaceful scene, even if the poppies weren’t as prolific as in other fields. I loved the calming, sweeping shapes of the hills and the vibrant reds contrasting against the softer grasses and white wildflowers. The road beckons you back to the stone farmhouse in the distance, while dramatic voluminous clouds dance across the sky, mimicking the foreground shapes and creating a sense of harmony. Repeating colors throughout, I love how the Impressionists used vibrant hues to add to the mood of a scene and create flow, so I brought my contemporary approach with broad strokes and thick texture to their traditions. I hope you, too, can feel a sense of peace and joy when you gaze into this Tuscan landscape.

New "Visions of Wildflowers III" Bluebonnet Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“Visions of Wildflowers III" ©2019 Niki Gulley
36" x 36" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

In this Texas wildflower series, I wanted to capture the excitement and energy felt during a beautiful April day when the bluebonnets are painting the horizon in blue. Driving through the hill country in springtime, there is such an amazing explosion of color from the bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush, coreopsis, Evening Primrose and the plethora of wildflowers, that it fills your heart with joy and awe. Focusing on the rows of color, I wanted to communicate the emotion felt being surrounded by all of this Texas beauty.

New "Waves of Wildflowers IV" Texas Hill Country Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

"Waves of Wildflowers IV" Texas Hill Country ©2019 Niki Gulley
12" x 24" textured oil painting

Painted on location in the Texas Hill Country, I was drawn to this expansive mass of yellow wildflowers, stretching all the way from foreground to background. The explosion of sunny color made me feel so happy that I wanted to capture that joy and excitement in my painting. To create that mood, I decided to leave a lot of crimson and gold in the sky to enhance that feeling while using diagonal staccato strokes to suggest energy and drama. Long sweeping shapes that flow across the horizontal panorama canvas add to the peace and happiness of being surrounded by Texas Wildflowers on a beautiful spring day.

"Waves of Wildflowers" Texas Bluebonnet Painting by Niki Gulley

“Waves of Wildflowers" ©2019 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 25.5" x 12.5" textured oil painting

Just Sold! I wanted to capture the rhythm, color, and density of our bluebonnets and vibrant wildflowers flowing along the grassy rises and falls of the berms so indicative of the Texas Hill Country. Making sure not to over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the energy found in nature, Waves of Wildflowers is loaded with texture, color and movement. Dramatic clouds set the backdrop while vertical curving rows of cobalt and crimson lead your eye to the house tucked into the distant foliage, welcoming you home. Arranging the bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush vertically are designed to lift your spirits and add joy to your home.

New "Texas Trails" Bluebonnet Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Texas Trails" ©2019 Niki Gulley
16" x 20" textured oil painting

I painted "Texas Trails" this spring while visiting Austin and the surrounding area. This might have been one of the best years for the bluebonnets and wildflowers. The explosion of color along roadsides was incredible! This morning started out slightly overcast, and the sun kept peeking in and out of the clouds, creating a soft glow to everything it touched. I wanted to capture that magical light illuminating your journey on this Texas walking trail lined by bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush. I hope you, too, can feel the excitement of springtime with the wildflowers abloom in the Texas Hill Country!

New "Room with a View" Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Room with a View" • 16" x 20" textured oil painting
 ©2019 Niki Gulley

As we were nearing the end of our New England adventure, the temperature dropped 30 degrees overnight and we woke up to 20 degrees and frost the next morning. Luckily the view out our window was beautiful and I could continue to paint the magnificent fall foliage from the comfort of indoors that morning! The lace curtains at our b and b were so delicate and pretty and I liked how they gave the scene a sense of nostalgia, so I included them and the window frame in this view. In the distance, you can see the sunlight illuminating the fall colors frosting the rolling hills with a glimpse of the purple mountains peaking through all of that glory.

New "Valley Overlook" Tuscany Palette Knife Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

"Valley Overlook," Tuscany ©2019 Niki Gulley
10" x 20" textured oil painting

During our Tuscany Foodie Trek, we headed to the wine town of Montepulciano. Perched atop a giant hill with beautiful views of the surrounding vineyards below, I set up my easel at this breathtaking overlook while the rest of our group visited wineries or took a cooking class with a local chef at a nearby award-winning restaurant. The view of the valley below is gorgeous with miles of olive groves and vineyards stretching to the horizon. I chose to paint the vertical puzzle of rooftops and buildings stacked in the foreground with the lush valley stretching to infinity in the distance. You can see a sliver of the blue-domed duomo below set amid the rolling hills and perfectly planted rows about to be harvested. I hope you enjoy the morning escape to Tuscany!

After lunch, we visited a winery nearby to sample their Rossos, Vino Nobiles and the delicious sweet dessert wine, Vin Santo. Full from the local meats and cheeses and tasty red wines, we headed back to the villa for a quiet night of relaxing and soaking in the evening scenery.

SOLD • 9" x 12" textured oil painting

Day 4:  Ireland ART TREK
Cliffs of Moher
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Just Sold! On the fourth morning of our Ireland Art Trek, we explored the exotic Cliffs of Moher. Unfortunately, we received some of that Irish sunshine and only got in a quick glimpse before the sideways rain and wind got the best of us. Since the afternoon was washed out, too, we decided to paint our impressions back at the hotel. Several of the tourists went into town to shop and sightsee, and the photographers gathered around the fireplace to receive a lesson on Photoshop and Lightroom. It turned out to be a great day! That night we dined again on a delicious seafood dinner at a cozy garden restaurant nearby.

New "Strolling the Canals" in Venice by Impasto Painter Niki Gulley

"Strolling the Canals," Venice ©2019 Niki Gulley
9" x 12" textured oil painting

I painted this piece on location during our Art Trek we taught in Venice while their infamous Carnival celebration was taking place. Since St. Mark's Square can get overrun with tourists, we chose to set up our easels along a side street to enjoy the peacefulness and beauty of the city. I love the magical light that comes flooding in through the canals and is so distinctive of Venice. It is such a romantic city and I wanted to capture this couple strolling along hand in hand, setting the mood of this enchanted city.
