Monterosso Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Morning Overlook," Monterosso ©2014 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 9" x 12" oil painting

Cinque Terre and Lake Como Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams
Day 3: Monterosso and Cornelia

Just Sold! After a busy day in Riomaggiore the day before, our painters stayed closer to home and painted this beautiful scenic overlook of the town of Monterosso. The photographers and tourists spent some time exploring our town and then took the train to Cornelia, where they shot and shopped in the village perched highest of all the Cinque Terre towns.

Later that afternoon, we reconvened and stopped by a local winery to sample their whites, reds, limoncino and regional delicious dessert wine, Sciacchetrá.

New "Ready for Harvest III" Grapevine Painting by Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley

"Ready for Harvest III" ©2019 Niki Gulley
16" x 12" textured oil painting

In “Ready for Harvest III,” I set up my easel at the agriturismo we were staying at in Tuscany to capture this gorgeous view of the rolling hills and the grapevines planted on their property. The grapes were so plump and juicy, it looked like they could be harvested any day. I liked how the plantings framed the view in the distance, creating a sort of window pane in the foreground, with just a sliver of the farmhouse in the mid-ground. With some clouds rolling in, the sun created that unusual glow that I’ve only seen in Italy with gorgeous purple shadows and gold and pinks hitting the hillsides, giving them form. I hope you, too, are transported to this peaceful place surrounded by beauty, warmth and delicious home-grown food and wine.

"Ready for Harvest III" is hanging at Seaside Gallery in Pismo Beach, CA. If you are interested in purchasing or more details, please contact them at:

New "Ready for Harvest II" Winery Painting by Texas Niki Gulley

"Ready for Harvest II" ©2019 Niki Gulley
16" x 12" textured oil painting

I love how in Tuscany you are surrounded by grapevines everywhere you go. My husband and I visited late in the summer to capture the area’s beauty on canvas and film. I was drawn to this vineyard outside of Montalcino, home of Brunello wines. I was attracted to the vibrant vines contrasted against the progressive miles of golden rolling hills dotted with more grapevines, olive trees, and plowed grain fields. The gorgeous, plump purple grapes were ready to harvest at any moment. Setting up my easel across from this vineyard, I began recreating the soft light that would break through the clouds and illuminate various hilltops and plantings. I arranged the vines to lead your eye back to the Tuscan villa and then to the beautiful countryside beyond. And when I finished, we treated ourselves to one of their delicious wines. A perfect afternoon!

New "Guiding Us Home" Oil Painting by Niki Gulley at Seaside Gallery

"Guiding Us Home" ©2019 Niki Gulley
16" x 12" textured oil painting

Inspired by our travels to Italy, cypress trees rise out of the vast open landscape signaling that you have arrived in Tuscany! Nestled in a valley with its long arbor-lined driveway, this villa is set against the perfect backdrop for a romantic escape. Undulating rows of wheatfields and vineyards draw your eye back through the rolling hills and beautiful billowing clouds drift overhead.  Late day sunlight casts dramatic shadows creating a rhythm beckoinging you to journey down the drive, guiding you home.

"Laundry Day" by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Laundry Day," Croatia ©2018 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 6" x 8" oil painting

Slovenia and Croatia Art Trek - Day 3
Led by Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Just Sold! On the third day of our Slovenia / Croatia Art Trek, my husband (Scott Williams) led the photographers and tourists back to the amazing waterfall park to explore some more. Since it is challenging to paint in there with the narrow walkways and many tourists in the afternoon, we stayed to paint at our and b. I loved the laundry drying on the line in their backyard with the unusual Croatia roofline in the distance.

That evening, we all gathered together for another delicious Croatian meal.

Andalusia, Spain Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Day 6 • Sevilla, Spain: Andalusia Art Trek
Mini orange tree, Sevilla • 12" x 9" oil painting by Niki Gulley

Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop Led by Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

On our first full day in Sevilla, we visited the exotic Alcazar Palace and Gardens in the morning, stopping for lunch on the way back to the hotel, and then we split up in the afternoon. The rooftop deck from our hotel had such incredible 360 degree views of the city with its interesting mix of modern and medieval architecture, from Moorish minarets and gothic cathedrals to newer residences, that we decided to paint right there. The photographers continued to explore the city while some tourists shopped and others visited the Cathedral, which is the third largest Gothic church in the world. That night we dined on an incredible authentic Andalusian dinner washed down with some tasty local wines - delicious!

Next summer we will be leading three different Art Treks to Tuscany, England and Ireland. So if you've always dreamed of painting, photographing and sightseeing in Europe, please join us for one of these amazing trips! See details at ArtTreks.org.

New "Ready for Harvest" Tuscany painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Ready for Harvest," Tuscany ©2019 Niki Gulley
9" x 12" textured mixed media

We visited Tuscany at the end of summer and were surrounded by grapevines everywhere we went. I loved the vibrant vines in the foreground framing the rolling hills dotted with more grapevines, olive trees, and plowed grain fields in the distance. I created this textured painting with palette knife and a lot of paint. I arranged the planted vines to lead your eye back to the Tuscan villa tucked into the distance. Morning light cast deep shadows on the ground and caused the leaves and soil to glow. As a treat when I finished, we enjoyed a picnic of salami, proscuitto, pecorino and of course, vino. Yum!

New "Visions of Wildflowers III" Bluebonnet Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“Visions of Wildflowers III" ©2019 Niki Gulley
36" x 36" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

In this Texas wildflower series, I wanted to capture the excitement and energy felt during a beautiful April day when the bluebonnets are painting the horizon in blue. Driving through the hill country in springtime, there is such an amazing explosion of color from the bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush, coreopsis, Evening Primrose and the plethora of wildflowers, that it fills your heart with joy and awe. Focusing on the rows of color, I wanted to communicate the emotion felt being surrounded by all of this Texas beauty.

"Ruby Bouquet" Poppy Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

30" x 40” textured oil painting

I absolutely love it when I come across a whole field of wildflowers – there is something about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of color that inspires awe and delights your senses. So when my husband and I came across this gorgeous ruby carpet in Tuscany we had to stop and capture the moment. I liked how the rows of poppies and rolling hills created a gentle harmony leading you to the quintessential stone farmhouse in the distance. I hope you, too, can feel the joy of a perfect spring day in Tuscany!

New "Texas Trails II" Bluebonnet Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

"Texas Trails II" ©2019 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 18" x 24" textured oil painting

Just Sold! I painted "Texas Trails II" this spring while visiting the Texas Hill Country. This might have been one of the best years for the bluebonnets and wildflowers. The explosion of color along roadsides was incredible! After delivering new art to my gallery, The Good Art Company, in Fredericksburg we ventured north to the Willow City Loop to take in the breathtaking vistas and plethora of wildflowers that normally fill the landscape there. I love this spot as you ascend hill after hill to arrive at the top with beautiful views of the valley below. Erecting my easel along the roadside, I set out to capture the bluebonnets framing the foreground of this spectacular view. The road on the right invites you to leisurely drive through the loop on a beautiful spring afternoon. I hope you enjoy the journey and all of your cares drift away!

SOLD • Textured oil painting • 24" x 18"

Just Sold! In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up into the treetops and heavens above. Choosing uplifting golds and reds contrasted against a dramatic deep purple sky, I've arranged the aspens vertically and in a circular pattern to give you a sense of laying on the ground, surrounded by the forest. Using diagonal leading lines with the tree trunks and limbs, your eye gazes into the focal point where all of the elements come together. Meanwhile, utilizing thick, curving paint strokes adds to that joyful, playful feeling of hope and discovery.

"Sunny Horizon" Palette Knife Sunflower Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Sunny Horizon" ©2019 Niki Gulley
30" x 48" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Inspired by a trip through the Midwest, I was filled with joy seeing this solid field of gold! At the same time, the clouds above were so voluminous and dramatic that I had to recreate the scene. The horizon stretches out before us as festive blossoms dance in the early evening glow. Leaving my strokes loose and free and working with palette knife to create volume and texture, all add to the energy of the painting. I hope you, too, can feel the peace and happiness of being surrounded by nature in all of its glory, staring into the clouds while soaking in the moment.

Ghost Ranch Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Desert Oasis" ©2019 Niki Gulley
18" x 24" textured oil painting

This summer my husband and I were asked to lecture for Southern Methodist University at the campus in Taos. We love the scenery in New Mexico so much that we decided to stay an extra week to paint and photograph. One day we drove towards Ghost Ranch where Georgia O'Keefe lived, stopping at this scenic overlook of the Rio Chama on the way. Loving the setting and the drama the light was creating on the distant rock formations, we decided to stay right there and capture its beauty.  Gentle S curves lead you down the river while shrubbery and mountain peaks create rhythmic patterns adding to the flow of the scene. I hope you, too, feel rejuvenated gazing into this desert oasis.

The lavender fields in Provence are incredible – perfectly manicured rows and rows of an explosion of violet as far as the eye can see. Rippling purple columns draw your eye to the lone stone farmhouse in the distance. "Waves of Wildflowers IV" Texas Hill Country ©2019 Niki Gulley
12" x 24" textured oil painting

Painted on location in the Texas Hill Country, I was drawn to this expansive mass of yellow wildflowers, stretching all the way from foreground to background. The explosion of sunny color made me feel so happy that I wanted to capture that joy and excitement in my painting. To create that mood, I decided to leave a lot of crimson and gold in the sky to enhance that feeling while using diagonal staccato strokes to suggest energy and drama.
